Comments Thread For: Conte: Nonito Donaire Will Thrive at 122, 126-Pounds

Strength and conditioning guru Victor Conte, the one-time owne of the infamous BALCO Lab, who now shows fighters how to maximize their performance on a strictly legal basis, told me the natural progression for "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire Jr. is to inch up from bantamweight to the 122 pound weight class.

He will and I will go a step further and come out and say it: He will terrorize the divison. Looking forward to seeing him going up.

Terrorize the upper divisions he will. When successful, non-believers of today will be calling him "Nonitoid" and his fans "Nonitards."

If he gives 'em some of those special shakes he'll be just fine (after all, that's what Conte is most famous for)... People have to understand that breezing through weight classes is not normal; especially, and I repeat, especially at the latter part of your career. It's one thing to go up in weight when you're an up an comer (or about 21 through about 25); it's a completely different thing to go up in weight when you're 28, 29, 30 and keep you're speed and power. It's just not normal... I'm definitely not gonna say that Nonito is on PEDs; however, if he keeps knocking people out at 122 and 126 like he has at 112-118, then you atleast have to become su****ious.

          He's 5'7 why not 130 or 135?

It'll just depend on if and how he beats the 122-126 pounders. If he beats them by using his boxing skills and getting decisions, then there really won't be a big issue; however, if he blasts right through them like another philipino we all know, then it will definitely attract su****ions.

For the same reason that the 6'2 and 6'1 Carl Froch and Andre Ward, respectively, do not fight at cruiserweight or heavyweight. Height is not the only factor in determining your weightclass. Width is taken in to consideration as well... Celestino Caballero is 5'10"-5'11" and recently fought at 122 and now fights at 126. He's very tall but very thin.

Nonito is very wide, you could fit Narvaez and Montiel on Nonito´s shorts.

Nonito is 5'7" and walks around at 140 lbs. He should have no trouble being effective at 122-126 and will probably move up to 130 for more lucrative fights.

Also, why the hell is Victor Conte allowed within 200 yards of any athlete, let alone being paid to be a strength & conditioning coach/nutritionist? Guy should be in prison or at the very least barred from anything related to athletes or training.
