Sources with direct knowledge of the ongoing negotiations have advised BoxingScene.com that former two-time WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41KOs) is the current frontrunner to face WBA "regular" champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15KOs) in December. I've been told the discussions are going very well and a deal could be reached as early as next week. No final decision has been made on the date, but Povetkin's return is sure to land on December 3 or December 17.

In the last two years, Monte Barrett beat David Tua, who is still very tough, twice (though one was scored a draw -- even Tua admits he lost). He should be getting this shot over guys who haven't done a thing worth mentioning in YEARS.

Rahman makes sense, in a "WBA corrupt logic" kind of way.

There are many better HWs than 2011 Rahman, but the WBA have him inexplicably ranked at #1.

But I think he's a better choice than the much older and more faded Holyfield, and a MUCH better opponent than the journeyman Maurice Harris.

Marginally. But I hate to see guys who have actually been achieving something get snubbed. The Monte Barrett who showed up for the Tua fights would make it very interesting for Povetkin. Which is the reason he's not getting the shot, I'm sure.

True ! barrett and povetkin sparred many many rounds with each other and barrett said he won most of them! i know its just sparring but barrett knows povetkin! but anyway how long does it take a broken jaw to heal? barrets jaw was broken in the 12 round by tua

Dude, I disagree with you here - Holyfield, IMO, is better than Rahman even though he is 10 years older. Rahman looked awful against fat cruiserweight bum Gallen Brown and needed 6 rounds to stop him. Even feather-fisted Chauncy Welliver and totally shot jorneyman Rob Calloway KO'ed this bum 2 rounds earlier. Tye Fields KO'ed Brown in 3rd and Joy Abell destroyed him in 1 round. It shows how bad Rahman is nowdays. At least Holyfield is in great shape and opponents he defeated recently (Botha & Nielsen) are still much better then Rahman's last 5 opponents. Dude, Rahman even doesn't bother himself with training - he weighed in 284 pounds in his last fight, need I say more?

well cant argue with that! holy despite beeing nearly 49 is still in better shape than rahman and harris!
