I hope your not implying that Mayweather would be top 20 all time great IF he would have fought Top Rank fighters Margarito and Cotto? Those 2 are and where never that good...
In MY book, if Floyd beats Pac he will easily be the best that ever did it and vice-a-versa. The way people hype Pac I wouldn't see WHY Floyd wouldn't EASILY get this title if he beats Pac. On the other hand Pac would just guarantee that spot if he beats Floyd.
But logically your correct if Floyd plans on being THAT great (like BHOP) he needs to stick around a lot longer (no vacations) and fighting/beating Pac would be a good start to earning and/or guaranteeing that ATG/best that EVER did it accolade.
Floyd could beat BHOP tomorrow and he wouldn't be G.O.A.T.
No one fight makes a man THEE best. And understanding the amount of hype that has gone into Pacquiao's career and public perception, it doesn't make sense to state that Floyd would be the G.O.A.T. for defeating a hype job.
That's simply doesn't make sense.Comment

I hate the fact that it has even been mentioned in this thread that Mayweather beating Cotto and Margarito would have made him that much greater. Sure it would have made his resume a little stronger but realistically in relation to ATG status how much would those wins improve his career? IMHO the biggest difference between Pac and Mayweather's resumes is simply that Pac has beaten a few ATG's in Barrera and Morales and Mayweather has not. So for me, the only fight that has a significant impact on Mayweather's status as an ATG is PAC (and if he were to fight Martinez). Other fights like Khan and potentially Canelo look nice on a resume but simply do not have SIGNIFICANT impact on his legacy/ATG status.Comment

Whoa dude .. that bold part is a bit insane.

However, logically Floyd will need to continue on to get that title IMO. Beating Pac and moving up to 154 is a great start.Comment

The title of this thread is confusing because how can someone who is known for ducking and and a diving, being a chicken, and retiring for such long periods have a flawless career?
Pac is eating himself to an early grave trying to campaign at the same weight as Floyd so Floyd dont run away hiding away in different divisions. Pac could drop down to 140, but he must stay on Floyds heels. Cant accuse Pac of being scared.Last edited by hugh grant; 10-12-2011, 11:56 AM.Comment

I'm talking about if he didn't retire and take so much time off. If he really wanted those fights he could have got both (margarito & cotto).
Hindsight though. If he was the first to beat Cotto. If he was the one that destroyed Margarito. If he beat Williams when he was unbeatable and the most avoided fighter. If he was the one that beat Tszyu and not ricky hatton (this is the one fight I'd say may have not been available with Tszyu always getting hurt or having some problem).
And then like I said, did something crazy like move up to MW. If he was the one that dethroned pavlik.
If he did all those things, retired undefeated, he most certainly could be ranked top 20 without anyone getting upset. If SRL is ranked top 20, floyd doing all those things he certainly would have a case for it too.
This is all hypothetical though obviously. I'm just saying I think he's an under achiever, regardless if you think that would have put him in the top 20 or not. He could have accomplished a lot more, imho. It's his life, his career, I'm fine with that. Just sayin
You want Mayweather to defeat Cotto, Margarito, Williams, Tszyu AND move up to MW and take Pavlik's belt and as a bonus perhaps fight B-Hop.
Doing all that and still be undefeated would, in your opinion, probably make him a top 20 ATG.
Seriously, don't you think it's far fetched? It sound plain ****** to me.
You hear guys like Emanuel Steward ranking Pacquiao at top 5-10 ATG (and that was 2-3 fights ago), but Mayweather, almost, gets a pass for being a top 20 ATG IF he had beaten the above mentioned fighters...
Sure. Sure.
Mayweather is already great and perhaps the best technician the sport has ever seen. Reading your post, he must be greater than anyone wants to admit seeing the standards you've set for him to pass.Comment
