And this is what dibella means by he doesnt bring enough money. The only way to make money fighting pirog is doing it in russia which martinez isnt and shouldnt have to do. But on the flip side pirog is not known by the HBO viewing public, sergio is barely known so money wise it doesnt make since here in the states yet. If pirog would get some fights on hbo or showtime and get his name out there just a little bit then im sure martinez would fight him. Im mean nobody besides hardcores know who pirog is, nobody. He hasnt been on tv out here since the jacobs fight.
you say that the fight shouldn't happen in the u.s. or russia?

so your conlusion is that the fight shouldn't happen????????????

"record purse" makes it sound like a bunch of nonsense

they'll need more than that to assert that martinez is ducking pirog

      how about a dollar amount?
      a ballpark even?
Same thinking but IF the money is legit, why not? There are other "if's" too...i.e. IF he has something better/bigger pending as has been hinted at; if he can negotiate to ensure proper officiating etc.

But, again, this is prize fighting. If somebody is throwing up mad dollars, even before an HBO or other network can sweeten the pot, that's worth a look. He's the WORLD Middle champ. Monzon used to go on the road (with lots of neutral sites like Monaco), whoop ass, and head home. I'm shocked Serg hasn't gone to some Futbol stadium in Argentina yet as is but, hey, is what it is.

A fighter can get robbed anywhere and I don't recall Russia being a haven for horrid decisions or officiating. It's fairly new as a market and putting on a major league event, clean, could jump start it so there is incentive not to have some atrocity on their soil. The whole travel and get robbed thing is overstated somewhat anyways.

Heck, Shumenov (Kazakh) didn't get his robbery win over Campillo until they came to Vegas.

Pirog's people are keeping his name in hardcore conversation. Hopefully, if no fight is in the offing, they're working just as hard to get their man some serious comp to put more heat on Serg through performance. If I was Team Pirog, I'd have my eye on the NBA situation and the possibility of ESPN trying to fill air time with boxing. Pirog being on U.S. TV is a must and ESPN hits a hell of a lot more homes than HBO.

Martinez fought Barker? is barker much known than Pirog? Hell No!

Popularity of Pirog is not the question here, But the challenge he brings. Pirog is a much threat to Maravilla, That's why he should or could take the fight to prove those doubters. And also silence Arum. If Martinez fights Pirog and beats him in Passion. Then he can whine and call on Arum's top dog's for a fight!

Beating Pirog wouldn't move the needle one damn bit in getting a fight with one of Arum's guys.

Good post. Why should he fight in Russia? Obviously by them providing such a substantial amount of money, they're riding on making a lot from sales in Russia. Fight in Vegas or Atlantic City again. Anywhere else doesn't make sense.

Pirog is a good challenger but not being completely tested, he still seems green, even if he's had some good fights already, they're rushing him.

Fact is location and money is not a scapegoat for Maravilla right now.

I think he will take the fight!
Apparently Russia has a huge RJJ fanbase. That's why he was offered to come over even though he was shot as hell. People were not paying to see the Lebedev . They were paying to see RJJ. The Russians were actually biased towards RJJ, not Lebedev in this case. On the other hand with Pirog vs Martinez, the investors (and the Russian fans) obviously have an intensive to make a Russian star out of Pirog.

if martinez really wanted a fight with one of arum's guys he should have signed with top rank instead of doing a long term deal with fringe promoter dibella.

Who knows? As I clearly stated, He can whine on Arum. Arum has been telling Maravilla to fight Golovkin or Pirog the two unbeaten Russians. If he beats them it could shut Arum's ***in mouth and stop him from protecting Cotto or JCCjr.

It's a win win status for Maravilla.
Consider that he fought Dzinziruk and Barker. Maybe he should try and test Pirog now

If beating a string of bad asses like Pavlik, Williams, and Dzin on HBO proper didn't do it, beating a guy whose sole U.S. T.V. appearance of note was on a barely seen JMM PPV ain't either.

There may be nothing of this earthly realm that can shut up Arum. There are decades of evidence on this.

I'd like to see Pirog challenge Serg and wish it was being built beyond website chatter B.S. But in no way would beating Pirog make some magnificent difference in getting an easy pay day against someone as protected as JCC.
