Roach says Gamboa will kill Donaire.

Roach is an idiot.
Donaire has good timing and is a master at counterpunching. He'd catch Yuri coming in and spark him out. Donaire has insane power and with Yuri's fragile chin he would take him out.Comment

Even though I really don't like Roach, I have to agree with him here.
Most people who are gassing up Donaire, really don't know much about him outside of his last few fights.
Great fighter, but severly overrated on this site. I see Gamboa beating the **** outta Donaire. Yuriorkis is faster and hits harder. Also people talk about Gamboa's defense but Nonito's isn't great either.
What people fail realize is that those great fighters Donaire KO'd are nothing more than 112lbers who are overachieving at the higher weight classes.
Gamboa is actually a 130lb who is at 126 for the bigger fights.Last edited by Khalid X; 10-11-2011, 12:27 PM.Comment

Some good points. I admit that I've only seen some of Nonito's last few fights, but I believe that's enough. All fighters evolve (or devolve). The Donaire we see now is who we must consider. If Nonito was terrible before, it wouldn't matter; he's terrific now. Of course, it remains to be seen how good he is at the higher classes.Even though I really don't like Roach, I have to agree with him here.

The same goes for Gamboa. I still see comments about how Yuri has no defense, how he carries his hands low, etc. Gamboa has considerably improved his defense. It's quite clear that he's made a conscious effort to bring up his guard in his last few fights. Yuri will never be a defensive genius, but he's not nearly as easy to hit as some people here seem to believe.Comment

This is my biggest fear. Gamboa's attacking style leaves him open for a big counter. Nonito has the kind of power to turn his lights out. Or does he? It remains to be seen if his power will carry to the higher weights.
The other thing to consider is that Yuri throws blazing combinations with power. It's one thing to counter a slower fighter throwing a straight right, it's another to counter inside a "Ciclon"....Comment

How is Nonito a more complete fighter?
Offensively, it's hard to go against Yuri. Yuri has one of the best offensive arsenal in the game. Nonito's offense is also top class, but it's hard to go against Yuri in that department.
Now I don't know what's up with haters criticizing Gamboa's defense. HBO did a compubox analysis of the elite fighters a few weeks ago to determine who were the best defensive playas in the game, and Yuri is second, right after Floyd. In other words, his defense is not only good, it's practically the best. Floyd gets hit only 16% of the time and Yuri is second with only 20%. Now to be fair, Nonito is 3rd with only 21%.
Furthermore, Gamboa is faster, has more pop and has decided to start using his ring IQ in the last few fights. Both of them are smart fighters, but when you compare their abilities, it's hard to go against Yuri.Last edited by 537Bwouaye; 10-11-2011, 01:58 PM.Comment

It's interesting to see those statistics. I was going to mention in a previous post that Gamboa really doesn't get hit all that often. If those stats are accurate, then my eyes haven't been deceiving me.
It's really nice to see Yuri switch up his fighting approach. I think his ring IQ is overlooked because he usually overwhelms his opponents. Gamboa is a smart fighter. He has the tools to be great and continually strives to improve.
The only thing standing between Gamboa and greatness is "Father Time". Yuri will be thirty in December. Hopefully he can leave his mark in boxing before his natural attributes start to erode.Comment

Yeah totally true. Roach values speed and power too much.
Any casual boxing fan would overlook the style of Donaire. Donaire is soooo underrated. Okay Gamboa would come out swinging, so what. Donaire has great technique, an incredible boxing IQ, and awesome counter-punching ability
Speed and Power is not everything, boxing is a sweet scienceComment

roach's comments are unnecessary...he seems like somebody with an agenda. if he's donare's trainer for sure he will only have good things to say about him. had it not crossed roach's mind that donaire is better than khan in almost all aspects of boxing?Comment
