I'd love for you to provide a simple, lamen's answer to that one.

By looking back on fights After they"ve been fought & guys are made to look avg just is hardly fair to a fighter. Williams was absolutely avoided. Wut other reason would a man feel like he has to travel between 3 wt classes for a fight. & I agree he was overrated. But I also think he took on a margarito that nobody else wanted to fight at the time . That was his biggest win(he def won that fight althogh close)
As far of the class of opp between Floyd & pac being a higher calibre...I don't see ur point. Clottey, tony (2 yr suspension)... cotto(post-tony)... 40 yr old shane (b4 & after getting shut out & beat up)... ORtiz.....Ricky Hatton...david diaz....I mean the only one who has a resume of tougher comp than martinez back to back to back to me is Froch... & truthfully...U mean to tell me that manny looked spectacular in the shane fight?? or the Clottey fight?? He didn't lose his position. Or floyd in the oscar fight or baldomir fight?? Point is....a fighter won't look spectacular in every match. & as floyd says...a real champ "FINDS A WAY TO WIN"
What 5 fighters do you rate above him??
As far as Williams being avoided. Well, I am not going to keep debating the issue but as I have already stated he is way overrated and I will tell you when I realized the fact that he was. I had not seen Williams fight and I kept hearing how bad he was and he was and how feared he was. Then something strange happened, I watched him fight. Honestly, I can't even remember what fight it was but I was hardly impressed and for the world of me I could not understand why anyone feared him. And as far as the Margacheato fight I personally believe Williams lost. And I am in no way shape or form a Margacheato fan. Simply because I believe Antonio should go the way of Luis Resto and should be banned for eternity.
As far as comparing Sergio with Floyd and the Pacman. Well, in my opinion there is no comparison just because both Floyd and Manny have been fighting much better competition for the last decade or longer. Manny won his first of multiple titles title thirteen years ago and Floyd is somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty title defenses of his multiple titles. And honestly that is saying a lot coming from me simply because I am not a fan of either of them. And I will even tell you why.
First off I have a very hard time rooting for Floyd simply because of the way he carries himself outside the ring. I also can't stand it when these so called elite fighters sit out and wait for super fights and fight once every year and a half or so. I also believe that it is just as ridiculous that Manny fought Margacheato for the 154 belt. A belt that I believe neither one of them deserved considering Antonio was coming off his suspension and Manny had never even fought in the 154 division. So, how were either one of them ranked in the top ten of the division and how did they deserve to fight for the title when they weren't even in the division? And anyone with any amount of boxing sense knows that the fight was made just so Manny could add more "bling" to his pile.
I stated all that jut to show that I am not a fan of of Floyd or Manny. However, I don't have to be fan of either of them to realize that their resumes far exceeds that of Sergio's. Simply because between the time Sergio lost to Margacheato and fought Cintron, a span of ten years and multiple fights, I barely recognize any of names of the fighters he had fought.
You also have to keep in mind that his debatable loss to Williams was less then two years ago. And in that span he has won the middleweight title from a limited fighter who was having tons of personal problems. He then beats the overrated Williams in the rematch. He then beats a decent fighter who spent his whole career fighting in Germany. He then struggles with a fighter that no one had even heard of before last Saturday night. A fighter that he that he was suppose to dominate. And I will say again he has only beaten two real middleweights in Pavlik and Barker. So, to me his resume simply does not add up to being one of the best P4P fighters on the planet.
In closing you asked me who I would rate above Sergio and I assume you meant on the P4P list. And honestly I am not sure because I was not debating who else belonged on the list. Simply because I don't even know enough about some of them to even form an opinion on them. My only point was that I don't believe Sergio has the resume to be on the list. But, in fairness to him I believe that other than his age being a factor he could become the great fighter that so many already seem to think that he is. I just don't think he has arrived yet and last Saturday night did little to sway my opinion of the situation.

HBO and Letterman would have you think Sergio was just breezing along winning every round and running into zero resistance. If it wasn't for Stewart's much needed opinion, a person would think it was all Sergio just listening to the call of the fight.

Also there is always to much drama when it comes to Cintron and because of that I can't personally take him or his career seriously. As far as Dzinziruk is concerned I will say he is a decent fighter but hardly great and therefore easy enough to make look average. I also believe that he was exposed once he decided to step up his level of competition outside of Germany.

Originally posted by mistermartin View PostIt absolutely bugs me when a guys accomplishments get panned & slighted. U forget that Serg started fighting @15. The man is 36 yrs old. He really is a career wwelter who recently grew into jmw & fights between there & MW. He beat kermit cintron 3 diff ways in one night & was given a draw. He fought P will (who no one else would fight) on short notice & was robbed in the 1st fight. & sparked him in the 2nd. So that 2 vickies on a guy most fighters in 2 divs avoided. Then he beat the recognized MW champ Then Dzizurik. He looked sensational in just about every fight. Barker came into this bought w/ a very concentrated game plan that did not involve offense. He he serg more than usual. But sergio has always been hittable. His entire offense is predicated on luring opps to reach & try to hit his unprotected head then spring into attack w/ lightning counters. Barker took care not to reach or really try to hit SM unless in very close range...It was a wrinkle SM did not seem to have anticipated.
In the past Serg has shown the ability to adjust & follow a superior gameplan to beat opps. As well to show skills we hadn't seen from him in previous fights. To say he is overrated is shortsighted. Barker gave a better acct of himself than expected...kudos. But serg came from having a broken nose to basically fighting the MW vesion of pac/vs clottey....to winning by ko. I firmly firmly believe had Barker oppened up & looked to score....he would've been ended by rd 6-7....no question. He was the equivalent of a team slowing a basketball game down to half court games so not to get a high flying/high octane team going. The whole point was to extend the fight to be there at the end. But the state of barkers face tells the story (and he was DEFENSIVE the entire night)
w/ all that said no question he desrves his space as 3rd best in the world. Both floyd & pac have looked mediocre in fights & it doesn't change there status or rating. Sometimes opps have a style that makes another's look bad...plus..wuts wrong w/ a competative fight. These are pros...it's supposed to be competative. & if u think serg is overrated...tell me who u think will beat him from 54-60....Most likely I'd disagree. I could see pirog's style as a problem...but unlike his 19 or 20 opps serg hits back....hard. def not the same. Sturm should have the style pedigree & exp but He seems to be lacking desire these days...who else?
