The title was Vacant WBC Super Lightweight.....

And yes you are wrong Cano was ranked #12 in the WBC rankings.

As for why Cano,

When Mathysse pulled out the WBC pretty much went down the list to see who would step in against Morales for the vacant belt.... everyone was already either busy with a scheduled bout, had just fought, or didn't want to step in against Erik.

Morales and Cano might have been the best fight on that card. Still wish it was either Maidana or Matthysse that fought for the vacant title, but as long as Morales defends against a contender, he will have proved he deserves the belt.
