IMO he did nothing majorly wrong, it's just magnified by stans.

The only thing he can be criticized was he was also surprised he saw Ortiz toppled like a tree and he didn't know how it happened and just counted off.

A good ref is on top of every situation, be it the little things and the large.

What happened with Floyd - Ortiz was one of those in between those big and small.

Fighter's safety is important. He could still count Ortiz out coz assumingly let's say he let's the fight continue but he's looking the other way, and how would he know Floyd got a steel chair and smashed Ortiz's head WWE style?

Those lapses can mean big at a different circumstance which can be fatal for a fighter only if a ref was attentive.

Dude you looking lay blame where there is none. Even if Cortez was looking at the fighter what is he suppose to do yell at Ortiz to get his hand he going to hit you ? NO !! The fighter were order to continue fighting period .. The circumstances as to why Ortiz to drop his hand and hug was his own choice, and was not the responsibility of Cortez or Floyd too look after. The ref job is the make sure the fight is fair and the safety of the fighter if the fighter can not defend himself, NOT if the fighter DECIDES NOT TO DEFEND HIMSELF which Ortiz did in this case.

ortiz got what he started a street fight tactic, but floyd wascpacing back & forth angling and cortez should have notice that and took both fighters to the middle and even warn them to keep it clean instead he was too worried about the timekeeper but ortiz should have stop kissing so much after starting a fight although floy did use elbows incredibly senaky but ortiz head was used clearly a few times

Why would he tell the fighters to fight and then look at the timekeepers and ask if they were ready? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Cortez did nothing wrong!! Ortiz blew the pportunity of a lifetime by throwing that foul...I mean ask ya selves y?? Y did he do that? He go ktfo and he deserved it!!

This whole thing was Ortiz's fault. Floyd was fighting a clean fight. I dont see anything wrong with the way Floyd uses his elbows. he just lifts them as part of his shoulder roll in order to block incoming punches. Its not like he's trying to land elbows as part of his attack. The problem is the amateurs that he fights always come lunging in with their puches and they risk catching an elbow to their neck or head. Notice how Floyd stands straight up and down with feet planted when he punches, hence his incredible accuracy, thats how you box.

lets reverse this! what if floyd got penalized for elbow use and after the point deduction ortiz was the one to sucker punch floyd, i don't see how cortez even begins to count rather he would probably disqualify ortiz

Remember all this happened in the heat of battle. It happened in the spur of the moment. Its not like Floyd's gonna site there and rationalize the whole situation while he's in fight mode and Ortiz is sitting there with his hands down.
