As boxing fans we should try to somehow combat this problem. We have a huge community of boxing fans, writers, fighters, et al here at Boxingscene and we should think of ways to leverage our numbers. Maybe we can start calling the WBA offices, or petition them, send emails, etc. These jokers need to be held accountable and we can at least put them on the spot and make them a little uncomfortable.

This is why we need a national boxing commission. They could easily ban sanctioning bodies that declare more than one belt per weight class. The sanctioning bodies would get rid of the 2nd and 3rd class belts overnight.

A national boxing commission is badly needed. Until then the Ring belt is the only one we should give respect and credence to, I guess.

If a division doesn't have a lineal champion, then for what ever reason the best fighters aren't fighters each other.

The following divisions don't have lineal champions, so no one fighter should be able to say that they are outright the best in the division:
                      Cruiserweight
                      Super middleweight
                      Junior middleweight
                      Junior welterweight
                      Junior Lightweight
                      Featherweight
                      Junior Featherweight
                      Bantamweight
                      Junior Bantamweight

It isn't a coincidence that in each of these divisions there is more than one fighter claiming they are the best in the division.

Welterweight and Heavyweight are the only divisions whereby an arguement could be made that the lineal champion are at least equals with the number one challenger. We all know Wlad and Vit won't fight (justifiably), and we all know Floyd and Manny should (a disgrace if they don't).

So I guess my point is, a lineal champion (who earns the right to be called by that name) will give a far clearer understanding of a singular "Champion" than a world champion, who gives up fees in order to be ranked, fight for and "own" a belt.

It isn't perfect, but it is a damn sight better than the alphabet soup nonsense.
The problem with this is that the BEST fighter in a division need NOT be the Lineal Champ. There have been dozens of examples of this.

As for being the RING Champion, I don't regard it as much more than "Oscar's Choice". The days when RING Magazine was the voice of world wide boxing are LONG GONE. Now it's just a business addition to the Golden Balls budding conglomerate. There aren't any boxing writers who are sufficiently expert, as there were when RING really meant something other than "news releases" and poorly compiled superficial facts.. Where are the Dan Daniels, the Nat Loubets etc?? Nat Fleischer is gone and is not coming back, even as another expert.
