You'll find in many sports that the best trainers, coaches, and people in charge of personnel tend to be guys who weren't remarkable pros or in some cases ever a pro.

There are general managers in American football, basketball, and baseball who are amazing and constantly outsmart everyone, who never played their sport at any level.

Do football coaches have to be good at their respective sport? No. Some people just have an eye for a sport that gives their team or fighter a strategic edge that they wouldn't see for themselves. There's brains and brawn, always been that way.

Can you name any trainer/coach/manager who weren't good in their hayday (or maybe didn't even fight/play the sport) but turned out to be good leaders of men?

Floyd has made some really dump statements in the past like 'Larry Merchant you are just a commentator and you know **** about boxing',then this thing about being a good boxer to be a good trainer,what a load of bull.

Training and fighting require different skills,just like there are many kinds of learniing.Knowing what and knowing how are different things.Floyd's just a good fighter and is good at what he does.Is he someone you can take advice from?Not much

Exactly. This is the reason why you hardly ever see great players make it as great coaches in professional sports. Basketball is my favorite sport and the superstars in the League have always failed as coaches.

Magic Johnson failed as a coach.
Larry Bird failed as a coach.
People think Michael Jordan ruined Kwame Brown.

Yet, Greg Popovich is considered the best coach in the league and he never played in the NBA.

That's true. One of the main reasons Magic Johnson was turned off by coaching.
