I don't think he means Vargas now, Vargas was a great fighter before Tito and DLH, he just traded when he didn't have to, and didn't have a great chin.

The beating that Mayorga took from Trinidad (as awesome an offensive fighter as you can see) was worse than anything Ward has ever taken.
Then again, Ward isn't as foolish a fighter as is Mayorga. Ward's not incredibly skilled, but he wouldn't have just put himself in harm's way, like Mayorga did against Tito.

Both are very tough guys.....but Jose Luis Castillo (not Gatti) makes 'em look like wimps.

I'd say Mayorga's defence is probably worse realistically. His basic skill in the craft isn't as good as Ward's. Mayorga basically has no defence to speak of, wheras at least Ward protected himself and moved a bit. And Mayorga throws a lot of looping power shots with little care for accuracy, whereas Ward had the deadly left hook to the liver and a pretty good lead right.

Neither will be confused with having Hopkins like defence for sure, but I'd say Ward's understanding of how to defend was better than Mayorga's. Mayorga takes unecessary shots because he thinks it makes him tough (and also to discourage his opponent), Ward does it because he doesn't care if he gets hit as long as he hits back.

exactly, and also to add. Mayorga is a dirty kind of rough house fighter, but he cried to the ref when Tito was being dirtier then he was.....Ward never complained, ever in his whole career.....just like all tough fighters, they never complain, they take and give right back, like Hopkins and Holyfield, there aren't the nicest fighters, but they never complain about a foul.....never... that's the true sign of toughness....
