Comments Thread For: Showtime's Hershman Open To Staging a New Super Six

Ken Hershman, executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, is still open to running another boxing tournament that approaches the size, scope and length of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, which has been criticized for taking nearly two years to complete. Speaking at a news conference to promote the finals on Tuesday between Andre Ward and Carl Froch on Oct. 29, Hershman dismissed chatter that it took too long to get to the championship round, saying that with so many competitive matchups in the preliminary rounds- it was worth the wait.

Howabout doing one at lightweight, now that JMM is moving up and probably not coming all the way back down.

    - Brandon Rios (USA)
    - Miguel Vasquez (Mexico)
    - Kevin Mitchell (UK)
    - Michael Katsidis (Australia)
    - Jorge Linares (Venezuela) vs Antonio DeMarco (USA) winner

and....either John Molina (USA), Hank Lundy (USA) or Sharif Bogere (Uganda/USA)

I agree. Great fights for the past few years!

        Taylor vs. Abraham
        Dirrell vs. Froch
        Ward vs. Kesslar

        Abraham vs. Dirrell
        Ward vs. Green
        Kesslar vs. Froch

        Ward vs. Bika
        Green vs. Johnson
        Froch vs. Abraham

        Ward vs. Abraham
        Froch vs. Johnson

        Leading up to

        Ward vs. Froch

Say what you want - these are good match-ups. Yeah, we had the subs, but still entertaining fights, none-the-less.

I'd be all for another one!

The super 6 was awesome. Anyone complaining just doesn't know how to appreciate good matchups.

Another tourney at LW like someone suggested would be just as good if not better. These guys at LW aren't as big of stars as the SMWs were in their own countries so there would likely be less egos to deal with. Most of the fights would be here in the states I imagine.

Mercito Gesta would be good to include to appease the Pinoys.

The Super Six has been the greatest thing to happen to boxing in my lifetime. Showtime has established itself as the network with the greatest willingness to truly invest in the future of the sport, as well as the network that consistently puts on excellent productions and excellent fights. The Super Six has been a great success- anyone who knows anything about boxing or can trust their eyes know that the two best fighters are in the finals, regardless of how it played out- and they both earned their way there. I'm not sure who actually has complained about the Super Six; I read that people are upset with the way it has unfolded, but does anyone really think it hasn't been completely worthwhile? Who wouldn't want to see another, when the best fighters are again and again forced to fight one another to decide the true champion?

Right now, it's difficult to find an appropriate weight class for a similar tournament though. At Lightweight, all the best fighters have either moved up to 140 for more lucrative fights, or are preparing to do so soon. Bam Bam will likely move to 140 after another fight or two, and the remaining contenders at 135 lack dynamism or truly superlative skills. Also, I'm not sure that either Golden Boy or Top Rank would ever allow their top fighters into a tournament of this type. Luckily for the Super Six, the SMW division has long been popular in Europe, where many promoters are willing to let their fighters into a tournament of this type, and that the best Americans happened to be promoted by Gary Shaw and Lou DiBella.

In a perfect world, Featherweight would be the best place to stage a tournament like this next. Whether or not Top Rank would allow Gamboa in a tourney like this remains to be seen, but even if Lopez moves up, we could have Gamboa, Mikey Garcia, Orlando Salido, Chris John, and two other top contenders. Would be excellent, and bring in many different fanbases.

I'd like to see a Super Six for 154lbs and 140lbs.

The Super Six has been an absolute God send. All these big match-ups occurred directly because of the Super Six. We probably would have seen about a fifth of the activity in the SMW division otherwise.

I agree lightweight would be a very good shout - or how about going even lower?
