Can somebody please explain to me how Hatton was "overrated"?

It puzzles me how people come to this conclusion. Do you really believe that, or are you just trying to criticize Floyd and Manny's wins over him?

Nobody said Hatton was the future of boxing. Nobody said he would beat guys like Roberto Duran (and anyone who did was either ****** or trying to hype him up, like they do with ANY top fighter). Did a few people pick him over Manny and Floyd? Sure, why not? We hadn't seen Floyd against a come forward brawler with that much heart since Castillo, and he gave him hell. Pacquiao is also a midget, and aside from that meaningless win over DLH he hadn't done anything good above 130lbs. But overall, both were favored over Hatton!

The guy had power, heart and came forward with everything. He'd beat everyone at 140 right now aside from Khan and Bradley. So how does that make him overrated? Nobody aside from a few idiots made it seem like he was the next greatest thing. He completely dominated the JWW division for years. Cotto-Hatton would have been a great fight at 140. But he sucks because of his chin? So I guess Khan and Hearns suck too, right? No, obviously not.

I'd guess because outside of Tsyzu he doesn't have a standout win. You can nitpick Floyd's win by saying Hatton wasn't very good at 147, or Pac's by saying Hatton had already been knocked out, but both were very good wins over a good fighter.

          The term "overrated" is subjective.

It all depends on who is doing the rating, and what the rating is.

If someone were to say Ricky Hatton was the greatest 140lb champ ever.

          They just overrated Ricky Hatton.

If someone were to say Ricky Hatton was a bum with no skill, no heart, and should have never been champion.

          They just underrated Ricky Hatton.

His drunken fans were a little obnoxious with all that "there's only one Ricky Hatton" stuff. I was in the Boston Garden the night Hatton fought Collazo and after hearing that chant for the umpteenth time, I was a little annoyed with Hatton's fans and certainly didn't want to be counted among them, especially after that crappy performance from Hatton and after that crappy decision from the judges. The sight of so many sad dejected Collazo fans waiting in North Station after the fight for their long train ride back the Bronx is also not something I will soon forget.

Hatton was overrated by his British fans at times but overall i think he was underrated by most boxing fans.

He was a little overrated when he was fighting but he's getting a little underrated now he's retired.

Hatton's reputation is yet another casualty of the flame war that persists on this board. Many people only saw him fight 4 or 5 times: May, Pac, Tsyu, Castillo and Collazo no matter how much they say otherwise. Dude's only crime is he got beat by two of the 50 greatest fighters who ever lived.

Amir Khan is an exceptional fighter. He's better than a lot of guys already. I just don't see how Hatton sucks and is overrated. Sure he doesn't have amazing talent, but neither does Rios, Margarito or Maidana and people ride their ****s like they're the second coming of Jesus.

He may not have beaten any elite boxers outside of a past prime Tszyu, but that doesn't mean he couldn't or he's a bum. If a prime Ricky fought Marcos Maidana, the scored would be 120-108 across the board in favor of Hatton. He'd probably stop Zab Judah, Holt and Alexander and UD Matthysse too.
