      It depends on what you mean by saying "power" ... we all know what's speed, the ability to move fast, in boxing at least fast enough to get the opponent off guard .

      However power is a more complicated concept. Power is not being really strong. Power is not about punching really hard. Power is actually the ability to apply the greatest amount of strength in the shortest possible period of time.

      Power is defined as: Work done / Time required
      P = W/T = (Force x Distance) / Time required

      So yeah, strength is an important part of the equation, however if it requires a lot of time to apply that force, the power output is not going to be very high. In order to generate power, it's important to have a good amount of absolute strength, but also to be able to apply that force in a short period of time, and that's why some boxers who aren't apparently that strong, can generate a great amount of power by combining their strength with speed.

      Now this...

      For boxing....it's always been a speed sport to me - if you have speed ,you already have one half of the equation when trying to measure force maximized.

      speed (or acceleration) x mass = power .

      simple analogy, i know...
      This is very very wrong ... you're actually talking about force.

      Force is defined as mass x acceleration

      And it's also very important to say that the key factor in this formula is ACCELERATION, not SPEED, both of these terms are actually very different when it comes to physics.
      Acceleration is very important in this formula also, but it's not the same as in the power formula. For example huge guys such the HWs, can generate a lot of force by moving a lot of mass, even though they don't have a lot of acceleration. However, some can't generate a lot of power, since their strength is applied in a long period of time.

      IMO power is more important because it's also including speed.

        speed = wins you decisions

        power = wins you knock outs

        so the fans def. want some power before speed !

          I voted speed. But the ability to smile (even fake ones) on TV and sell Grills is more important.

            Speed. Cant hit what you cant catch, and as posted earlier, its the shots you dont see coming that **** you up the most...

            Boxing is about landing shots without taking damage, im not as impressed with a one punch knockout as much as someone getting outboxed. Sometimes boxers get caught, when that happens i dont usually see them as the better boxer but merely the victor on that evening.

            Still a W and not meaning to take away from that, but to wear someone down and score a tko or ko from a flurry or constant pressure is more rewarding through my eyes.

                Depends.

                In a boxing match, I'll go with speed.

                In a street fight or cage match, I'm going with strength/power.

                If you're fighting someone 10x your size, the only way speed will help is if you're running.

                  I'd much prefer to have speed than power.

                    speed if you want to score points, but power if you want it out of the judges control.

                    But speed and power is essiential. SRL, SRR, RJJ, Pac all hit hard but they have speed as well. So you cant really have one without the other, or you certainly wouldnt want one without the other.
