    For Iwatch....:

I try to catch fights "live' wherever life takes me and whenever time, finances and circumstances permit.

The ones that come quickly to mind are:

    Hagler-Hearns in '85
    Hagler Hamsho in '84
The Thrilla in Manila in the mid 80's

Of the Benitez fights, I managed to catch:

    vs. Leonard in Vegas
vs. Curry (the second fight) at MSG, NY back in 77

When I was in my teens, my late father (who was a boxing nut too!) and I
watched Flash Elorde go down for the second time before Carlos Ortiz at MSG, NY.

I watched Manny Pacquiao getting KOd in Thailand as a Jr. Bantam (or Flyweight?) when he had to give up his world belt prior to going up the ring for failing to make weight, as well as a handful of other earlier fights. But circumstances have not been kind enough to enable me to watch any of his fights up close and personal since he went up to Featherweight.

I managed to catch the first MAB-Erik fight, though. From the cheaper seats.

I'm just an old man that has retained much of a boxing kid within. A fan.
Other than work, I don't do much else other than try hard to go watch a fight somewhere (my kind of work takes me to a number of places).

Thanks again for the Benitez clip! I did enjoy it!

Thats a pretty good list, I've only seen Benitez vs Hearns(some)/Leonard. I want to see Carlos Ortiz fight, I've seen some clips from the Latino Legend DVD (where they called him "the Chavez of his time"...whatever that means...), but never a full fight or anything, I'm looking to buy his fights (dont know where)....been watching boxing since I as 17, Oquendo vs Bryd was my first "real" fight that made me a fan...my first live fight will probaly be a Cotto superfight.

        Thanks!

Ortiz was someone to watch! I was a bit disappointed when Canastota took its time to grant him recognition. I just thought ( and still think) he should have been enshrined much earlier. I'm not sure, but he and Wilfred went in together, or just a few years apart.

From what I can recall, Ortiz went into boxing as a troublesome and troubled kid off the streets of NY. He spent his early childhood in the Big Apple then spent some years in his native Puerto Rico before putting down stakes in NY to sustain what eventually became a stirling career.

Post-boxing, he even won a political post in NY, didn't he? He was tough in the ring, but is such a role model outside of it. His old-age persona is even sparkling! Some of the interviews I've read reflected his wit!

I know somebody who has tapes of the two Ortiz-Elorde encounters and a bit more. I'll ask him about copies when I bump into him (not sure when, though). I'll pm you. Hope he'll prove to be generous.

Lately, I've settled down to watching fights on TV-- I'm in the thick of stashing away some for retirement, so I'm on a frenetic pace with my work. God bless global television for affording me the chance not to miss too much. I somehow have managed to get adjusted to being chased by big fights (many are brought to nearly every nation on earth these days) than having to chase them-- flying to venues, wherever they are.

But, yes, there's nothing like watching the action "live". The smell (although in those held in Vegas, the fight aroma is often drowned by perfume and cologne in the expensive seats; so, I take the ones higher up), the crowd reaction, the conversation...

In retirement, I may just be able to do many...

That'd be great, I would be happy to buy copies of them if possible. Theres a few sites that have one or two of his fights, but none of the really good ones, they even list his best fights as "not for sale" (the only fights not for sale with 1980 Japanese fights)in one...

I don't think the fella is selling either. I just hope he'll feel generous. Moreover, he's just an acquaintance. I don't have his contact numbers or email but we do get to bump into each other in hotel lobbies and bars and then talk about boxing. Once he promised to bring along tapes from his collection to where our schedules would hook us up and he delivered. We watched it along with other like-minded fellas in a hotel room. Nice fella.

It's been months since I last saw him, though. I'll pm you here on BS after I get to talk to him.

I have not asked him if he's a member of Boxing Scene. May be he is. If he is, then he'll perhaps get to read this thread and pick it up. Hope he is and he does.

I confess i am not much into collecting... What I have is scant and one that is not worth mention anywhere.

Thats straight, I meant if it was possible, or whatever. I plan on selling customized boxing DVDs by mid next year, for on the side while I go to school, I'll consider it a hobby and collect fights of Ortiz, Benitez, Trinidad, Gomez, Torres ect. I already got Cottos career...non PR fighters I want to collect are Cubans.

That's a good idea you have there; I mean the DVD's.

That is the best reaction to KO'ing somebody I have ever seen.
