I had never seen Hope fight. I HEARD he was a solid fighter....who had some decent wins. He was a fairly tricky southpaw. Benitez was trying to win his thrid title,& he did so.
That fight proves that guys not known as big punchers can still throw a big shot, & score big KOs. That's as brutal a KO as you can see.
Hope began to convulse a bit while on the floor. He spent the night in the hospital (possible concussion, & some lost teeth). He wound up getting MARRIED the next day, however.
Wilfred, alternately called "El Radar" and "The Bible of Boxing", was and continues to be one of my favorites. He was the best defensive fighter I saw "live". His offense coming off defense was a marvel to watch! So, fluid, so elegant, so seamless! He was instinctive. Intuitive.
Challenging Antonio Cervantes for the WBA Lightwelterweight title, he lied about his age (18 was the mandatory requirement for a fighter to step into the ring for a world crown) and thus became the youngest to hold the WBA Lightwelter crown.
