Do most boxing "fans" actually HATE boxers?

I can't help but notice the total lack of empathy and the seething hatred that so many supposed fans of the sport have for the people in it. It seems far more so in boxing than in any other sport.

For example, Kelly Pavlik has personal problems and is on the verge of ruining his career, and instead of empathy for a fellow human being, almost all I read are remarks like "he's a loser neo-****," "he's a drunken fool, a bum," and "he's white trash garbage."

Fighters like Wlad and even Marius Wach get very big wins and the instead of getting praise, the hatred level in boxing forums against them gets turned up to 11.

Cris Arreola is making a big effort to get his career on track, and instead of encouragement, most of the comments I read about him are putdowns, calling him a fat waste of time, an untalented bum, asking "why doesn't he just quit?" etc, etc.

Really, this is kind of amazing. It's like boxing fans lack any kind of human empathy. Is this what it means to be a boxing fan? Sure seems that way.

I agree, you missed the perfect example, Bernard Hopkins.............he wins a belt at 46, and instead of praise...people tried to discredit his win......

    Poor, isn't it....

I didn't read a lot of threads on Hopkins win, but it sounds typical.

I don't like him, but he did do a great job against Pascal.

I don't think there's any other sport where fans loathe so many of the people in it.

It's like the only reason to follow boxing is to hate people.

            Yeah, kind of.

Certainly they care more about boxing. Boxers are a means to an end. If a boxer keeps producing good performances against live opponents, he'll get the praise which comes with that(see Froch). If he doesn't, then the abuse starts.

Incidentally, one will always have a false impression of boxing fans. The nature of the sport means it attracts aggressive sociopaths and they tend to shout the loudest, drowning out all reasonable debate.

I don't dislike any boxer personally, I dislike the way they are promoted or such.

But if there's any boxer that I hate as far as personality goes, it's probably B-Hop.

                That's a good point.

Hate is a strong word thrown around too much. Just as love is. There's no boxers I hate. I don't know them. I have boxers I dislike and aren't fans of, but I respect them all. I think respect is the most important.
