You always hear about guys that are demons when sparring the champ
but fall apart on the big stage. Who are some of the best gym fighters?

Can't think of many . I remember an Irish heavyweight called Joe Egan who was a sparring partner of Tyson back in the day when Mike's sparring partners didn't stay in camp for long . Egan said that he took beatings from Tyson but never gave up , getting up from knockdowns etc. and that Mike called him the toughest white guy he knew . He never did anything big in the pros .

I also remember pac sparring a 1-6-1 fighter or something and people were confused about the choice . Maybe he was a good gym fighter.

I think Doug Fischer once said that Shane Mosley and Ola Afolabi were beasts in the gym; the best gym fighters he ever saw.

Came in to say him and he was rightly the first mentioned.

He was apparently the most skilled / talented boxer to ever come out of the Kronk gym according to Steward and others, then he went pro and turned into an alcoholic, the end, unfortunately.

Heard so many stories / myths about Superbad, the guy must have been a beast.

Roy Williams was a beast in the gym. There's a great story about him and Ali in Larry Holmes autobiography "Against the odds".
