a recently funny documentary was the "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". they live 20 people in 1 house and have rubbish everywhere but spend huge money on a dress? What the fark? Talk about priorities.

MEDVED hope you don't mind my butting in to thank you for your kind words. The Roman people-the Gypsies- are not connected with Rome, more likely Romania, but they call themselves the Romany. There were a couple of good books about Gypsy life written by a mid 19th cent writer called George Borrow, which I have somewhere. They were "Romany Rye" and "Lavengro". "Rye" meant "nice young man". Even read them in school.

Some thought they originated in Egypt, hence "Gypsies". No one really knows where they come from, they had/have their own language and hated Catholics, particularly priests. I read these books long ago so I could be wrong, but they were very famous, and made Borrow's reputation as a major writer. Gypsies are in most major countries, and keep in touch with each other. I often used to see adverts in the Sunday papers, for racing forecasts and fortune telling by "Gypsy Petulengro" whom I'm sure some older posters will recollect.
Generally "diddling" the public, which was, everyone except themselves.
Tinkers (travellers) were/are on a much lower level in Ireland than in England, and led a wretched life. But it was a huge task to break them of it, and I don't even know how successful that has been.. We used to say that England was 50 years behind the US and Ireland (although right next door) was 100 years behind England.

I'm not questioning his "history", anyway, I'm questioning his insouciantly maniacal worldview, which he likes to blandly twitter about as if it's the most natural, inoffensive thing in the world to support a state which exacts a program of persecution and genoinnocent people, while objecting to even the smallest challenge of said murderous state like it was a grave offence against his mother's name and crying like a b*tch about the holocaust at any given opportunity.
