I think that Goosen is right in that the HBO commentators do start to vibe along a similar groove a lot, to be agreeable. There is nothing unexpected in that. Larry Merchant will be the sports curmudgeon and be disagreeable and cranky and that tends to make my enjoyment of the fight a little less.

But then again the name, American fighter gets the benefit of the doubt on the officials cards and Goosen did not point that out. That is also a truth and it doesn't necessarily have to the name "American" but the boxer with the bigger name wherever his roots may be. Williams was expected to win, but he did not fight a particuarly good fight but I think that expectation gave him some of the rounds that should have gone the other way.

I personally watched the fight 3x. I had it 7-5 for Lara twice, and 6-6 draw the third time.. Paul has always been a volume puncher, and honestly I can see a few rounds where judges chose Williams' activity>Lara's accuracy. Sometimes activity just looks better that accuracy and I think a few rounds took that shape..

Its not the first time volume beat accuracy..
Fights are not judged the way you apparently think they are. Activity is a factor, but far from the only factor. Let me describe a couple of simple examples.

Fighter "A" throws 100 punches in a round, but does not connect on any, and fighter "B" throws 50 punches in the same round, but connects on ten, fighter "B" would should objectively be judged the winner of the round. There is no dis*****g this. There is no "But fighter 'A' looked so much better, stylish, active, etc."

Another simple example. Fighter "A" connects on 10 "pitty-pat" punches in a round and fighter "B" connects on 10 thunderous punches in the same round; fighter "B" would objectively be the winner of the round. The number of punches landed are a factor, but the quality of the punches is also a factor.

I feel like I should've been giving this lecture on July 8 to the "judges" at the Lara-Williams fight....

Wow, what's with all the sane comments acknowlegding that a promoter will always "say" he thought his fighter won...

Usually, everyone is clamoring for his head on a pike becuz they think he's ******.

Golden Boy dropped the ball twice for not getting involved. In the promotion and not having their boxers back first with that guy who lost to Alexander because it was Don King event And it was a in house score for the home town fighter .And know this happening to Lara he fought his heart out their and they took it from him I blame his promotor for not having his back it is true about HBO guys sometimes I think they do that a lot and they make it seem that the other boxer is doing a good job and us boxing fans see it different but their right about this call.

Goossen is everything that is wrong with boxing. He needs to retire, he is a hypocrite!

I thought Lara won the fight hands down. Paul was more active but looked like an amatuer. He rarely landed anything clean and his defense was horrible. It got to the point it was looking scary for him. The left hand just kept on landing flush. There is no doubt in my mind that a rematch with Martinez will have the same results. One thing that stands out in my mind about the commentating was Roy's comments, which I believe are true. If that had been Martinez hitting Paul with those left hands, Paul would be in the hospital. There's no way a fighter on Paul's level should be getting hit so clean with the same punch.I think his career at this level is over. Peterson is a terrible trainer and I've been saying that for years now. I don't want to see a rematch between Paul and Sergio because it would be very dangerous. Also, Paul would never make it at super middleweight or light heavyweight. He needs to retire before he gets hurt.

Bull**** to all of that. HBO saw the same thing we all saw...a once top 10 fighter getting hit at will by power shots. They are allowed to say so. They claimed the fight was a robbery. So do 99% of the people on here. And saying Paul had it together after the fight is laughable. Paul sounded so punch drunk it ruined my night. The only fight Paul is ever getting on HBO again is as a stepping stone for a young gun. He isnt the same fighter he was.
