Comments Thread For: Mercito Gesta Not Looking To Be The Next Pacquiao

CARSON, Calif.—It wasn’t who he beat. It was the smooth manner in which precocious, 23 year old Pinoy lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta demolished Mexican veteran Jorge “El Tigre” Pimentel Saturday night at the Home Depot Center which was impressive.

“I want this kid to fight for a title, maybe before year’s end,” a glowing Arum said in the ring after Gesta’s first bout under a new promotional contact. “I don’t want to be too ethnic but he’s the next (Manny) Pacquiao.” Arum made similar remarks at the post fight press conference and Gesta just blushed at the effusive praise. Frankly, besides being fighters, Filipinos and aggressive southpaws, Pinoy Idol Pacquiao and former Muay Thai style boxer Gesta could not be more different. Getsa has nifty hand speed and some slick footwork that Pacquiao, at the same age, did not have. It’s only been in recent years that Pacman has been floating like a butterfly while always stinging like a bee.
It’s no stretch to state that, at a similar stage of pro ring development, Gesta is the more polished product."
Next PAC huh? Sounds interesting but its too early to tell, and i dont think there will be another Pac from the Philippines. we'll see.

Quite often Marley is as dense as the one-time london fogs. Arum was talking comparative talent, not style. Also, Marley is wrong to say that MannyP. did not have the same amount of handspeed and footwork at the same age. Again...Arum was not talkig about comparative ages.

And in these points Marley is clearly wrong anyway. MannyP. was a 2-3 time World Champion at this age, and had devastating speed, which made his footwork go unnoticed anyway.

Marley, pay more attention to what you are saying......as if he ever would.

Kannabis **** Weed, if anyone is the next Pac, it is Donaire. But anyone with a brain and 2 eyes can see Gesta is a serious prospect with potential to be champ.

yeah, that should be a good measuring stick for gesta...if he cant beat a guy like katsidis, he'll never be a champion....

Interesting match up. For the kid to step up the competition I think this would be the perfect fight for him right now. I don't like all the hype he's getting by these writers... It's too early. It's not Gesta's fault, but man all this hype is just stacking pressure on the young up-and-comer. Let's see how he responds...
