Personally, I'd say Williams deserves an easier tuneup after that KO, but Williams wanted to be on HBO so Lara is what he was offered.
an ishida fight would have been smoke and mirrors.

What a surprise that an article about PW brings out the haters. I hope he reconsiders this stance, but when you fight the style he does you age quickly. He always comes forward and is always looking for a fight, which makes it strange to me that he is so disliked by many. Sadly in the end he will be most remembered for the KO Martinez put on him, and not for their first war or his win over Chetto. Either way I have my tickets for the Lara fight and I will be there to cheer him on win or lose.

And he will also be remember for the fighter that had Bob Arum say this:

First we have to see how Pacquiao does against a bigger guy. One of the problems in a Paul Williams fight is it's one thing for Pacquiao to go up in weight and fight these big guys, but he's 5'6 barely and he'd be fighting a guy who is almost 6'3. Now that doesn't seem like it would make a great fight, but we'll see,"

                And Emmanuel Steward

Emanuel Steward recommended that Pacquiao not fight bigger and/or better junior middleweights like Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams. Steward said “The idea of him [Pacquiao] fighting Martinez or Paul Williams, extremely big guys, it doesn’t fit too well. Big guys that are fast also. I think the excitement right now is in the 140 pound division. That might be where to go. The Amir Khans that are coming up. The Tim Bradleys, and those kinds of guys. He may have to go back to that area. Maybe just jumping up, up, up and up. After awhile, I think he’s plateauing up there.”

I also believe that when asked if Pac would fight Paul Williams. Manny answer was "NO". Fact is nobody really wanted to fight Williams but HBO had to pressure Paul into a rematch and they still demanded a catchweight.

Great post. The Punisher is a man in a sport that supports divas. It's a damn shame really.Boxing is gonna loose a lot when he leaves.A throwback fighter,1 of the last left.

if he retires in two years nobody will know who he was in 4

williams to me has never shown exceptional skill, power or speed...aside from being freakishly tall for the weightclasses he's competed in and his ability to throw over a 100 punches a round he never seemed like anything special to me

panda did think him and pavlik was a 50/50 fight though...its a shame they never fought

No Paul don't retire yet. After just one brutal loss. That's a damn shame.
