Has Roy improved or lessened his rep in your eyes with the last Tarver fight?

To be honest I think Tarver also pitty patty punched his way to winning of those rounds. I mean in even Episode 3 it's not that he dominated, it's just that HE threw more punches and jabs.
Originally posted by AnorakThat wasn't a good win at all though. The rounds Tarver won, Tarver won big. The rounds Roy won, he sc****d. Yeah, he won, but as a boxing match, not as a fight. Tarver battered Roy and imposed his will on him that night.

Originally posted by AnorakBefore Saturday night I believed that Roy was going to go out an avenger and redeem himself. He nearly did... he got rocked, came back and even hurt Tarver.
But it seems that once the most ego-driven boxer in the game was now a man content to go the distance. His objective on Saturday seemed to be to just end his career without tasting the canvas, at least from halfway into the fight.
But that's what I think. What about you? Has Roy lessened or improved his rep by this? For me, it's lessened. There's now too many unanswered questions, like would he EVER have been able to have a fight like this. It's okay to line up the names he ducked and say "Yeah, Roy would have..." but we don't KNOW. And, for some reason, Saturday night put more doubts in my mind than ever.
For boxing exhibitions RJJ did well, but as much as I love the sweet science of hit and not get hit, my favourite boxer (Ali) proved he could take it when it became a contact sport. Roy did not.
Why should Roy's be lessened because of this fight? No, he didn't have the granite chin of Ali, but does that make him any less of a fighter? Does that take away from the fact that he won and defended belts in three divisions, and took a piece of the heavyweight title (albeit against the weakest opponent, and yeah, you can say he ducked so and so, but there are cases to be made with all of them).
So, why should it lessen?
I agree with Jabs, nothing happened in the fight, so it's a non_happening, as he put it.
EDIT: I agree with the guy above me, too. Tarver pity-pats a lot of shots. When he sets in, he can really hit (so it seems), but most of his shots seem to be arm-punches more aimed at winning rounds than KOing opponents.Last edited by BadMagick; 10-03-2005, 10:38 PM.

Originally posted by BadMagickDon't you think it's kind of ridiculous to lessen his past-achievments based on a fight he was clearly scared to trade in? Not to mention it's the last fight (hopefully) of his career. Is Ali's rep lessened due to his loss to Holmes (which was brutal, might I add), and Trevor Berbick (who? I know who he is, but he wasn't that great of a fighter). The answer is quite clearly no.
As for the guy above saying Tarver didn't do much to Roy last Saturday (other than nearly KOing for the second time, of course)... as Tarver himself said, he thinks he hurt Roy more in their first fight. I agree.

hmm
32% of people are saying it's lessened Roy's legacy. Are they all Brits, S-L?
Anywho...the point is...ask this poll again in a few months and then again in a few years and you will see that nmber decline as ppl forget about Roy's loss and also put them in perspective. My opinion on the matter is anyone who thinks Roy's legacy is lessened due tor ecent events at the age of 36 is an idiot, a rookie, a hater, or needs time to think it over.
Ali is still the GOAT even with his ****ty performances late in his career, as well as Leonard and Robinson and Hearns.

Ali's last fight was a lot worse than Roy's last fight. Ali took a beating and never had to lose 18 lbs of muscle like Roy did, since you wanna go there.
Roy's legacy is still the same. No better, no worse.
Look out for S-L's latest edition... the people who voted that it had lessened Roy's career were probably all Brits or noobs.
You don't think Roy's the best... you don't know **** or you're a foreigner. It's as simple as that.

Well Well WELL!... What do we have here???... "If you think that Roy Jones Junior's *cough* "Legacy"was hurt by Saturdays - cat calling, chicken dancing, tounge sticking carnival show then you either don't know anything about boxing "Noob", or you're British?"... LOL!...
The funniest bit was when he was mimicking a chicken by hitting his gloves against the inside of his feet and sticking his tounge out. That was great but the general concencious is that the U.S people didn't get their $49.95's worth PPV...
That fight wasn't shown in the UK incedently.
How many times have I said to you Super_Lightweight that you'll never learn anything whilst you behave like an ostrich with it's head in the sand???

Jones was an all time great before Tarver. However, he will also be remembered for the dozen champs he somehow never matched with and 3 losses in a row will drag him down a little. Like SRLeonard, he was a jerk to negotiate with for bouts and worse than Ray, he often refused to promote the fights.
Also, had he adopted the good ol' country boy persona he was raised with instead of all that needless ****** rap posturing and showboating he would have been more popular overall which also affects ratings. He might have fought a different style fight which might have been more fan friendly.
What's funny is how seriously some have taken this extremely limited poll. Roy's place will be decided by boxing historians. Probably the best SM in history, might squeeze in a top 10 LH list, and of course the Ruiz win was his pinnicle, but damn, he sure went to hell fast afterwards which sorta raises some questions about his Ruiz win. Mosley has had similar problems for obvious reasons. And no, Roy didn't have to lose 75 lbs of muscle either or whatever his fans are claiming!
