That's to his benefit..he's got like 40 fights already as a pro.

So we gotta wait til he's 25 55-0 until he really gets to defend that strap against someone good?..

We would have to see how Williams looks against Lara first. If he looks shot, Canelo should jump in.

            That's still No Ceilings/Burner tho..

and I agree unless Williams just shuts out Lara in a superior fashion like he's been reborn, than maybe not, but I doubt it'll happen, and I think Alvarez is ready for a step up in competition. Williams is a good name who's been to California a few times and it would draw good numbers.

Floyd Mayweather jr. fought Genaro Hernandez at 21.
Oscar de la Hoya fought Genaro Hernandez at 22
Tyson fought Spinks, Holmes, Berbick Tucker etc all between the ages of 20-22

Genaro Hernandez isn't a dangerous fighter, Paul Williams certainly is. The first time Oscar fought a dangerous guy was Miguel Angel Gonzalez in 1997.

But even then Canelo shouldn't be stepping in the ring with a Genaro Hernandez type for another year and he shouldn't be in with a Paul Williams type for 2 or 3 years

Canelo beat two tomato cans on HBO; no way could he step up to Williams and possibly "destroy" him. No offense, but Martinez, Williams and Angulo would clap Canelo like a standing ovation. Yea Williams got caught in the last fight, but Canelo is no Martinez. I see Williams taking it to Canelo early and often IMO

This fight makes more sense in a year from in December 2012. Good fight for Paul on his way out as he could get a nice pay day because Canelo is such a big draw. If Alvarez gets 2-3 more legit opponents under his belt, he may have caught up enough with a potentially declining Williams to make it a tough fight.

A lot obviously would depend on them winning all their fights. Right now, I just don't see Canelo's people wanting to put him in with such a tough fighter. Williams is a tough fight for a young guy: experience against top tier fighters, a chin, high work rate, southpaw, tall and long, a warrior's mentality. He has just been in so many tough fights and in every possible situation.

I wonder how much rust Williams has. In 18 months he has fought <6 rounds. How much an impact will that have on his game?
