  • Why don't Fighters Fight at their Natural Weight?

Wouldnt it be much healthier and easier instead of losing 30 to 20 pounds? I know they say they do it for a size and power advantage at the lower weight classes but still that has to be unhealthy on the liver and kidneys. But do you think that is the main reason they fight at lower weights?

These are the possible weights not hard facts but I heard from interviews and such how much they weigh and estimated their offseason weight from the hbo unofficial scale.

manny pacquiao fights at 130-126 and walks around at 150
Erik morales fights at 130-135 walks around at 165
Ricky hatton fights at 140 walks around 175 and up
Arturo gatti fights at 140 walks around at 165 170
miguel cotto fights at 140 walks around 160-165
joan guzman fights at 122-26 walks around 150
kermit cintron fights at 147 walks around at 175
antonio margarito fights at 147-154 walks around 170.
Jermain taylor fights at 160 walks around 180

Fighters who walk around at their fighting weight or close to it are:

Floyd mayweather fights at 140-147 and walks around like 145
Marco antonio barrera fights at 130 walks around 135
demarcus chop chop corley fights at 140 walks around 145
bernard hopkins fights at 160 walks around 168
shane mosley fights at 147 walks around at 155.

Fighters do things that aint good for them. You know, things like GETTING PUNCHED IN THE HEAD.
The reasons they do these things vary from fighter to fighter. Fame, Fortune, Glory etc.

As far as thier "walking around" weights. That's the weight they might be at when they are not training thier asses off 8 hours a day.
You tend to shed weight when you do that kind of work.

Some fighters let thier weight go in between fights. Others stay in or close to fighting shape all year round.

But the question is kinda ******. If you don't know why fighters might want to get down to the lowest weight possible. I won't waste my time.

its all about the big fights, for the most part, fighters are trying to stay in a division where they can get big fights but still be really competitive. think about jermian taylor vs antionio tarver. tarver is simply too big, and taylor loses some of his power at higher weights. it is a similar story with hatton, his swarming style would be countered with a guy five inches taller than him with a huge reach. fighters are doing whats best for them, and where the money is at

                  great insights guys!

I think its because they want to be able to move up like you guys said! but so they have other divisions to look forward too as they get older when its harder to shed too much weight as the body gets older and they also use it for a power advantage.

Good analogy of tarver vs taylor! tarver walks around 210 pounds and taylor walks around 180 so that would be a pretty big difference.
