for me, i just can't comment on someone i've never seen...i wasn't around back then and didn't know the landscape of the sport during that era...i can take someone's word for it but i wont repreach someone else's gospel as mine

But, surely, considering what thse fighters achieved is documented and alot of the time the there is atleast footage of the fighters that they beat I.e Harry Greb then we can judge their greatness?

maybe we should separate the different eras.

John L. Sullivan era - Jack Johnson era - Muhammad Ali era and inbetween we have the Jack Dempsey era and the Joe Louis era and as we go down in weight, it will be a cleft Europe as there are more fighters that werent publicized like THE heavyweight champion of the world.

You have to. Especially here on NSB where you get guys saying Ortiz is bum for quitting then lauding Duran as the greatest ever.

Good point, I'll be pissed off if I saw Roberto Duran's "NO MAS" at his biggest fight against Sugar Ray Leonard. And I b1tch about Victor Ortiz quitting.
