Comments Thread For: At Long Last, Bermane Stiverne is Making His Move

By Thomas Gerbasi - The great thing about Don House, one of the fight game’s most underrated trainers, is that he’s not one to beat around the bush. Whether you want the truth or not, he’s going to give it to you.

Some fighters don’t want it, and it may be why some of his former charges, like Joan Guzman, Kid Diamond, and Zahir Raheem, faded from the top levels of the game after packing up and leaving the former United States Army veteran.

Even his current heavyweight contender, once-beaten Bermane Stiverne, had issues with the tough love issued by his trainer, and he went out on his own.

“When you’re ready to do this,” House told him, “you know where I am.”

Two fights later, Stiverne, who faces Ray Austin this Saturday in St. Louis, was back.

He was ready to do this.

“I stepped on my pride and my ego, and realized that it’s not just about me,” said Quebec’s Stiverne, who had trained with House since he turned pro in 2005. “I called him back, we sat down like two gentlemen and came to an agreement and decided to work together again. The way I box today, that’s from everything Don House showed me, so I couldn’t bring anybody else in. I had to go back to the source.”

It was a huge step forward for Stiverne, an ultra-talented heavyweight with fast hands, a nice jab, and crushing power. You would think that was a one-way ticket to the top of a division in dire need of excitement, but the knock on the former amateur standout was that he wasn’t willing to push things in the ring or outside of it. If he got you hurt early, odds are that you were going home early. If you managed to survive, he would let you.

That’s how he wound up with the one loss no one has let him forget, a fourth round TKO at the hands of the then 11-15 Demetrice King in July of 2007. House certainly didn’t soften his assessment of Stiverne’s lone defeat. [Click Here To Read More]

he's got power, speed & a great promoter but can he take austin's punch? i'm not convinced because its a big step from king & davis to ray austin...i could be wrong but i think austin is going to knock stiverne out.stiverne has not gone many rounds in his 22 fights & has been skillfully promoted by king.king got him the 3 regional belts with one punch & now he's in line for a title shot.as ive said many times regional titles are the best way to climb rankings & leap frog more dangerous contenders.

Stiverne is 32, he cant wait any longer to face real competition. And if hes as gifted as they say and got his weight in control Austin should be no trouble should he?

This article is the biggest unconfirmed publicity crap I have ever seen. Not sure who paid off who, or whether the author failed to confirm his sources, but I know for an absolute fact that Bermane has been training for more than a year, EXCLUSIVELY with DWIGHT YARDE and NOT House. Bermane has been training in Henderson Nevada under DWIGHT YARDE who aslo currently trains Hasim Rahman amd whom was in Mayweathers camp as well. Someone better get this right and acknowledge that it is DWIGHT YARDE who has been exclusively training Bermane for the last 12 plus months. Somebody is going out of his way, or cashing in some sort of favor to write such an article that associates House with Bermane for the last 12 months. Stop the posturing and give credit where it is due, and it belongs EXCLUSIVELY to DWIGHT YARDE.

Bermane Stiverne: (Who burst into tears in his corner immediately after the fight) “It’s been a bad year for me and the emotion came out. I lost two cousins this year and we had the earthquake in Haiti. My win tonight means a lot. I have never won a championship belt before, amateur or professional, and now I have three. I had a new training regimen for this fight. I trained in Las Vegas with my strength and conditioning coach Dwight Yarde. I’ve never worked that hard or felt this good. I owe a big thanks to Hasim Rahman who came in and sparred with me for over three weeks just to help me. And thanks to Don King and my team. This is great.

From FighREC. 2/11 - Directly from Bermane.

Again, NOTHING about HOUSE. He ran out on Bermane and it seems now, just when Bermane may have a chance - he shows up and gets a whole article dedicated to him. Learn something from the Master - BRUCE LEE - believe nothing what you hear, and half of what you see.

What is this, the Don House show? All of you should know that this article is written by a good friend of Don House who is involved with the UFC, an organization with which House is connected. Yes House trained Bermane Stiverne from the point he turned professional but for the last year House has not been a "team player". Fearing that Bermane was just another hopeful who never makes it, House bailed. And NYBoxerESQ is correct. Dwight Yarde picked up the slack. Dwight has been at every training session with Bermane, twice a day for the last year. House comes in a day here, a day there and leaves to take care of his UFC commitments. The biggest marked improvment in Bermane's overall performance has been at the hands of Yarde, who if anyone knows him, is the epitamy of a NO NONSENSE coach. He goes above and beyond what a regular coach would do to build a strong relationship of trust with his fighters and clearly it has paid off, seeing Bermane's recent rise. Bermane has all of the skills already, he knows how to fight. Nobody can teach him that. But when you get to that point, its all about being a smart, thinking fighter, its about physical conditioning and a large part of it is mental strength. Dwight has worked closely with Bermane to bring all of those things together. I find it amazing how such a contrived article can be published by such a reputable site. But those of you who have been in training camp know the reality, as does House. Its such a shame that in a sport where hard work and dedication is all that works, one trainer cannot give another credit where it is due. House and everyone else in Bermane's camp knows what I am talking about here. But lets not forget about the most important person in this equation, Bermane Stiverne. He has shown dedication and commitment to getting in the best shape of his life and is now set to reap the benefits. From what I have seen, Bermane Stiverne and Dwight Yarde have a very close bond and make a great team, both showing the commitment necessary to get Bermane to his much deserved Heavyweight World Title shot and beyond.
