You're right, he is Filipino first. That's what he reps in the ring and that's fine but he is certainly an American as well. He has now lived here the majority of his life and by the way he acts when he is out, is certainly not your closed off filipino traditional lifestyle. I'm sure at home like most Asian-American kids their parents keep their heritage alive and might even speak the native tongue but I'm willing to bet other than a few trinkets and a few other things to remind him of his first home Nonito has a house full of the typical American things. Probably owns a season or two of Married With Children.

That's good and I hope it's true. It's obviously important for a child to be close to their parents, they don't last forever but especially a fighter. Nonito is at that stage in his career where he is going to start moving up in weight and taking on even tougher competition. If he losses no one is going to have his back, so family is big. Plus he is young, no reason to be messing things up now.

His family busted their butts to come here and by you saying they aren't American could be looked at as a slap in the face. This isn't England where everyone just stays and dies, this is America, the land of opportunity. People that don't want to accept Donaire as a Filipino-American are people that don't know much about America in general.
This is my story but with a different country. I'm not American.

If you feel that just by living in America for a long time makes you an american, tell that to ICE and see what they say.

I listed a few reasons why he is American as well, not just living here a long time. For instance, Nonitos parents despite now living here a while have the Filipino culture drilled in their minds that they are pretty much 100% Filipino but technically they would be Filipino-American because of their citizenship. It's an era gap but in Nonitos case he obviously had adopted American culture. He acts like any other young, decently wealthy American adult would act. It's the way you act, the mind set, things you enjoy doing that make you who you are. Enjoying rap music, urban clothing, and going out to the movies with the wifey is obviously not traditional Filipino culture. Nonito got that by becoming American.

He tried out for the American Olympic team. He probably thinks of himself as Filipino first, but he's clearly also American.
