The demand for Mayweather and Cotto was after Cotto had beaten Mosley and Mayweather had beaten Hatton. You had the two best Welterweights in the world, both of them elite, both at the top of their game, both undefeated and two proven draws. It was the most logical match-up for Mayweather at that point. He would have made huge money and received great credit for beating an elite fighter that was on a hot run at the time.
This is the truth. The original poster is wrong about Cotto just getting into the division. When people were calling for this fight both had done the business in their respective fights and both had nothing else lined up. It was set up perfectly for the fight but Floyd didn't want it and then conveniently "retired".
