Mayweather's legacy is tainted except for hardcore fans. He won't face a great fighter at his peak.

But Ortiz is coming up. He looked stronger and more determined against Berto than I have ever seen him. He's bigger and stronger and much younger than Mayweather and that gives the fight credibility.

Leonard found his Terry Norris and Mayweather might find something similar in Ortiz. Leonard however faced Duran, Hearns and Hagler in their primes and Mayweather can't touch that.
I think you may be showing a little bit of boxing naivety there. All fighters develop at a different rate, and the boxing world changes fight-by-fight.

Mayweather is extremely expeienced at this game, he possesses instincts that are hard to comprehend.

I can guarantee you this..... Mayweather is WAAAAAY too smart to make an "assumption" based on an incident that happened three years ago, when ALL of the available evidence points to it being a non-issue now.

You are as good as your last fight, so Mayweather will judge the welterweight Ortiz, on his only appearance within that division.

Mayweather stepped up man, accept it.

Anybody who thinks that Ortiz is just a " quitter ", has absolutely no idea what happened to Vic in that fight, so most likely has no boxing experience themselves. I did not just describe Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

I don't think Ortiz is a quitter. I like him. You're a fan of Mayweather's so you build him up a bit more than you should, I think. Mayweather does avoid the top-flight fighters when they are at their best. I think most but his die-hard fans think so. I am giving this fight credibility. In fact I compared this fight to Leonard taking on Norris who he underestimated. It's a good fight. Mayweather still knows in the back of his mind that Ortiz showed the capacity to throw in the towel. So those type of facts give him confidence.

There's a decade of difference in their ages. It's a factor. I give Mayweather credit when it's due but I'm not into glorifying him as being infallible or godlike like it seems his fanbase will do. He still should be fighting Pacman and the old 'take the test' bs doesn't work on me. If Mayweather had as much confidence facing Pacman as Ortiz then that fight would be next because it is much more lucrative.

He is reading who the fans want him and Manny to fight, other than eachother of course at WW, the fans wanted Pacquiao vs Ortiz. Manny failed to give the fans that fight, Floyd comes in and takes it. He did the same exact thing for Mosley.

People wanted Pacquiao vs Mosley in late 2009, Roach said Mosley is too good, Arum said Mosley is not a draw. Early 2010: Mayweather[Mosley gets signed.

If this keeps repeating itself, then we should expect any fighter Pacquiao turns down, Mayweather will fight. One can only hope that means Mayweather-Martinez at 154 is possible, although I doubt it.
the cycle you just wrote on pbf fighting pac rejects is a sad state for boxing...and this may go on and on unless the pac/pbf fight or trilogy if you may so happens....we can not be happy on pac and pbf just going over making and comparing their list of foes,,,they got to fight

No, I am a Mayweather fan in that I appreciate his skills, but I dont give a flying fat *** about him when hes not fighting.

" Mayweather does avoid the top-flight fighters when they are at their best "

            Who ?

And if you say Margarito, this conversation is over.

Make me a list explaining how you think Mayweather should have stepped up.

Here is my list for Pac.....

" stepping up " would be fighting the best at lightweight instead of Diaz.

" stepping up " would be fighting the best at JWW instead of Hatton.

" stepping up " would be fighting the #1 welter Mosley, not the faded, shop-worn, clearly-vulnerable Cotto.

" stepping up " would be fighting Cotto at 147.

" stepping up " would be submitting to harmless random blood tests.

" stepping up " would be fighting the #1 welter Mosley, not the strangely innocuous bum Clottey.

" stepping up " would be fighting a JMW champion to win your 8th divisional title.

" stepping up " would be fighting any genuine JMW to win your 8th divisional title, not that welterweight bum Margarito.

" stepping up " would be not fighting faded champions who can clearly no longer pull the trigger, as-was the case with Mosley. It is a joke that the whole world could see that Mosley was shot, and yet Manny honestly thought that Shane was still a threat

" stepping up " would be fighting Victor Ortiz, instead of the 40yo midget Marquez.

Pac has had plenty of chances to " step up ", and he chose not to.

How else to take a statement released in the wake of his announced September return against WBC Welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO)? The statement read that Mayweather commended Ortiz “for accepting the fight, but on September 17, Ortiz is just going to be another casualty, the 42nd one who tried and failed. Trust me, I will be ready."

Mayweather and his team have made similar statements in the past. Indeed, Mayweather has 41 wins and, should he win in September, Ortiz will be the 42nd victory. However, in those initial 41, he picked two wins over Jose Luis Castillo. Considering how much trouble Castillo gave him, it makes sense he’d count him twice but he is still only one man.

              And, yeah…

              …that’s about it.

That’s all there is to criticize in regards to one Floyd Mayweather today.

After a year off and change from the ring, and rumors about all sorts of laughable potential foes from Matthew Hatton to Paul Spadafora swirling throughout, Mayweather’s return comes against the sort of fighter most assumed the 34-year old Floyd wouldn’t face.

              Younger.

              Bigger.

              Southpaw.

              Heavier handed, with explosiveness.

Mayweather will be favored. Mayweather will probably win. That’s not a negative. He’s Floyd. That’s what he does. It’s what he’s expected to do against almost anyone.

What matters here is the choice.

Mayweather has reached a stage in his career few ever do. He can pick his spots, just like Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya before him, just like contemporary and rival Manny Pacquiao can in parallel. With that stage comes a certain responsibility. Increased activity is requested. Real fights are required. [Click Here To Read More]
Finally, we see a story on this site about Mayweather and Pac that is actually fair to Mayweather and as close to being unbiased as the writers on this site can get.

Brilliant analysis! Unfortunately, it will be met with F-you and "Gayweather is afraid of Pac" comments instead of a legitimate, intelligeny counter argument.

Mayweather/Pacquiao vs Ortiz is the fight to make at WW...But we saw who Pacquiao picked, Mayweather capitalized on that mistake.

Same happened with Mosley. Arum/Roach turned down Mosley in late 2009, when he was the lineal WW champion and #1 ranked WW, instead fought Cotto. Mayweather came in and signed to fight Mosley and got the credit for beating the lineal WW/#1 ranked WW Shane Mosley, while Pacquiao fought him coming off a couple of bad performances.
After Floyd KO's or beats Ortiz really badly, Pacquaio will suddenly get the courage to fight the dangerous Victor Ortiz, just as Pac did with Mosley, Marquez and Hatton.

The answer to your question is: yes, you are the only one who doesn't give a crap about Pac and Floyd. Every other boxing fan and many non-boxing fans can't wait to see Floyd and Pac fight. That includes the ******s on this site who claim to hate Mayweather and claim they will only watch the fight on a "free stream" or at a bar. They will shell out the $60 just like me and every other fan to see Mayweather/Pacquaio. Afterwards, they will come on this site and whine about Pac getting knocked out because he has been in too many "wars" or how he started his career at 108 and didn't belong at welterweight or how the blood tests weakened him or how he was suffering from a broken back when he got in the ring with Floyd.
