Wlad: Peter's head is as hard as a coconut

Wladimir Klitschko: "Victory in this fight has untied my hands"

Overlooking his tiredness Wladimir has happy to answer our questions. However we were only able to interview Wladimir as he was driven back in a car to his training camp. Two-hour drive let to an interesting dialogue, although we were constantly interrupted by phone calls. It seems that everyone called Wladimir to congratulate him with his victory.

Wladimir, first of all, on behalf of your fans we would like to congratulate you. What do you think of the fight?
Importance of this fight I knew for a long time since a victory would've lead to a title fight, and a loss would've plummeted my ranking and I would've had to start all over again.
Truthfully, I was not pleased that I was knocked down three times. Even after hundred and twenty rounds of training with eleven sparring partners, not once was I hit. I also was not ready for Samuel Peter's illegal punches to the back of my head.
Certainly the best outcome of this fight would have been a knockout of Peter in the twelve round and I had a chance to do it, but I was only able to stun Peter. By the amount of punches that I landed against Peter, I can say one thing - his head is as hard as a coconut.

Wladimir, in the twelfth round with your left hook you strongly shaken Peter, yet you didn't finish him. Did you decide not to take a risk or just pitied him?
I don't feel bad for my opponents. I realized that in this fight I was winning practically every round except for three. I had an opportunity to finish this fight with a knockout. But it didn't happen.

Wladimir, before this fight you said that Samuel Peter's weaknesses would be shown in the fight.
His weaknesses are his lack of speed and slow movement. However I would like to point out that in this fight he was much faster than we expected.

Did Peter surprise you with anything else?
Samuel Peter realized how important this fight is and came into this fight in great form.

Wladimir, what do you think you have proved in this fight?
To prove something to someone was not my job. For me, most importantly was to win this fight. I had two tasks to accomplish. First one was to win this fight. And the second, more important, is to reach our dream with Vitali, where two brothers will be world heavyweight champions at the same time.

And what have you gained from this victory?
First of all, it untied my hands. I'm rated number one by two boxing organizations - IBF and WBO, thus I'll be official challenger for one of those titles.

Wladimir, what do you have to say to those who doubled your physical qualities, stamina and questioned your chin?
I'm confident that this fight answered all those questions. As for the last one, I'm not just going to let my opponents check the strongness of my chin. And in future I'll try to keep my fans from being as tense as in this fight.

Wladimir what part of the fight were you dissatisfied with?
I was absolutely not ready for Samuel Peter's unpredictable style. Especially Peter's punches to the back of my head.

But, nevertheless, you did not appeal to the referee in those moments.
I didn't want to bother referee with this problem, since it was pointless and I had to continue to fight to win this fight.

Wladimir, some analysts have compared your use of clinch to that of John Ruiz. Was it part of your strategy or did you use it to stop Peter's aggressions?
Clinch is part of boxing. Many fighters use it. Mohammed Ali was considered one of the greatest masters of clinch. This tactic was part of my strategy that we worked on during my training camp.

Wladimir do you think this victory has put you on a new page, after your losses to Sanders and Brewster?
It's possible to say so. Now I can confidently look forward.

Wladimir, this week Chris Byrd and Lamon Brewster are fighting.
I think that Chris Byrd has enough experience to beat DaVarryl Williamson. Brewster's fight with Luan Krasniqi will depend on one thing - will Krasniqi be able to pull himself together or not. If he does, he has a chance against Brewster.

Wladimir, let's assume both Byrd and Brewster win their fights. Who would you like to fight for the world championship belt?
I'll be ready to fight with whoever is willing to fight me. But thinking about it.On one hand I have already beat Chris Byrd. On the other, Chris Byrd is a top rated boxer, even some rate him over Vitali. Thus this fight may bring big interest.
But a fight against Lamon Brewster will also be interesting, since our last fight is still unclear to me.

But if you were to decide?
Against Lamon Brewster. A rematch with him will answer many questions.

Wladimir, after post fight press conference you stated that it's likely that you'll fight in December.
I'll give you a final answer to this question within next four weeks.

In this fight you won the NABF title. What do you think of this achievement?
I greatly respect this title. For me it was somewhat a surprise. However my goal is to win the world championship title.

Wladimir how are you going to spend your time after this fight?
On Friday I'll be in Bucharest where our project "Education for children in need" takes place. In October of last year, during a charitable marathon we collected necessary sums for construction of children's home. Now this house is constructed and I'll be flying there to see this project realized.

Wladimir, your worlds to boxing fans.
I want to thank all those that have continued to support me. Also I promise in the future not to worry them.

Something I love about both Klitschkos is how honest they are and how they're willing to concede when they make mistakes or overlook someone. The bit where he admits that Sam Peter was quicker than he or his camp ever expected is a perfect example of this.

    Long live the Klitschko brothers!

Samuel Peter has the best chin of any Heavyweight in professional boxing IMO.

Good article, but it sounds like he wants Byrd more then Brewster now. I think he needs to avenge the Brewster fight, but the IBF is a real title belt! It is going to be an interesting choice for Wlad. He has to wait and see if they win their fights first or not, then make his decision.

I think he wants Brewster first, to settle the score, but of course he is hoping that Byrd beats Williamson so that he can beat up on the outsized, light hitting Byrd.

Now this is coming from a Wlad fan. It's a few million in the bank for a fight he has almost no risk of getting hurt in. Byrd has no chance at all (not even a hafl decent puncher's chance) of beating the Wlad that dominated Peter IMO.

I am still in awe at the shots Peter brushed off...every other fighter fell to those Wlad bombs...even Brewster in WLad's defeat...Sanders of course had a chin to stay on his feet...but Sander's didn't really get hit by Wlad...didn't at all for that matter...

Especially when he waived him on in the 3rd round I believe.

Yeah that was really unbelievable. You'll see that once in a while in the lighter weight divisions with a guy like Mayorga but those were heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko punches we're talking about! What a genetic wonder. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that his bone structure and skull were of abnormal thickness.

Good thing he's a nice guy. If that were a street fight we all know Wlad wouldn't have lasted sixty seconds.

Nobody on earth can go toe to toe with Samuel Peter.

I am sorry. He is the baddest man on the planet in that area.
