    Mylon Watkins Vs. Rod Douglas

It's the man who beat Eubank against the man who beat Benn.

    This is a crazy post.

Mylon Watkins beat Eubank in the semi-final of the 1984 Champion of Champions Golden Gloves and Watkins beat Eubank in the quarter-final of the 1985 Champion of Champions Golden Gloves.

Rod Douglas beat Benn in the final of the 1985 ABA West Ham divs final en route to winning the ABA nationals and Benn beat Douglas in the final of the 1986 ABA West Ham divs final en route to winning the ABA nationals.

    Watkins or Douglas, who wins?

JUYJUY, I don't think Eubank went to the NATIONAL Golden Gloves.

He won a Gold medal at the Empire State Games and then went to the Champion of Champions tournament in St Louis (National Golden Gloves??), losing to Mylon Watkins.

According to Eubanks bio he had no amateur fights at all in 1985. He moved to the US in 1982 to finish his schooling and soon took up boxing for selfdefence because he was too outspoken and getting beaten up. He was raw at first and lost his first five amateur fights in 1982 but he came back two years later after two years of hard work and was much better skilled, in 1984 he reached the semifinals of the US golden gloves and won the 'spanish' golden gloves, he finished with an amateur record of 19 wins and seven defeats .. he had a handful of pro fights around the casinos of Atlantic city only when he was in desperate need of cash and working in his corner were Eddie Futch pupils Patrick Ford and Maximo Pierret .. Eubank always continued training though because he loved nothing more than developing his craft and was a gym fighter more than anything until returning to the UK in 1988 with amazing skills still developing ..

Eubanks one weakness in the pros was stamina .. but I honestly believe that Eubank would of been unbeatable over four two-minute rounds after the skills he developed between 84 and 90 .. that man was all skill no stamina ..

Oh and I havent got a clue who Mylon Watkins is so I cant say .. but Rod Douglas was a hot prospect who was robbed at the 84 Olympics but won the ABA nationals in 83, 84, 85 and 87 (Benn won ABA nationals 86) and Douglas won Commonwealth Gold in 86, exciting pro fights until bumping into Herol Graham who countered him alnight .. Douglas only had two defeats in the amateurs that I know of and they were to Iran Barkley at the 82 world championships, and Benn.

Douglas also holds a few memorable ABA divs final wins in 83 and 84 over former junior prodigy Michael Watson ..

Totally agree with that, it seemed Eubank almost always looked outrageously good for the first few mins of the first few rounds before fading out.

His name was Chris Eubanks back then not Eubank,he didn't delete the 's' from his surname until he was 22 years old.

The Spanish Golden Glove Championship was an open tournament organised by Jose Torres and Jake LaMotta in 1984,that's the only year it was held, all the top amateurs in the country were invited.

Eubank modelled himself (physically) on a gym fighter called Dennis Cruz, who according to Eubank was a good mover and perfectionist.

The other fighters Eubank admired were Thomas Hearns and Pernell Whitaker. Theres a photo of Eubank weighing 139 lbs. and he looked like an ephiopian with fuzzy hair,he looked like Hearns abit so maybe thats why he admired him. He's said that at one time one his goals was to become WBC light-middleweight champion only because a WBC belt would of looked good around his waist, although he didn't care at all for going into the history books he wasn't into that he just wanted money from pro boxing and was an attention seeker but was mostly into the poetic art of boxing.
