a fight is supposed to be stopped when a fighter cant intelligently defend himself. in other words if a fighter doesnt know where he is the fight should automaticly be stopped, makes sense right?
if a guy is taking loads of punishment but knows hes in a boxing match and is trying to fight back u can make the case "smoger let it go on bcuz he lets guys fight". but when a fighter is out on his feet hes not "letting him fight", hes letting a helpless fighter take unnecessary punishment and taking unnecessary risks with his health.
smoger letting fighters keep punching their oponent after they are out cold is not letting them fight. its disregarding their safety and there is no way anyone can defend it.
Fighters should not need a nurse refereeing them.
Enough Roy.

i agree jones had no buisness being in the ring with lebedev in the first place but that doesnt mean the ref doesnt need to bother to do his job.
u say fighters shouldnt have a nurse refereeing them, wtf is that supposed to mean? its not the refs job to stop the fight when a fighter is out of it? last time i checked it was their job to stop the fight when a fighter is unable to intelligently defend himself.
i guess that doesnt apply when a fighter is washed up then? like u say roy took the fight so doctors and referees might aswell stay home, hes washed up so theres no need for them to do their job, if roy gets hurt he has himself to blame. right?

that final punch made it a true KO instead of a TKO. KOs happen in boxing, get used to it.
incidently, long term damage doesnt usually happen from a nasty looking knockout. Its when a guy is continually hurt but survives and yet continues getting pummeled by clean shots. ie Bowe-Golota 2. and Smoger ALWAYS stops it in those situations.
If Roy was actually hurt after the fight, then you might have had an argument. But the guy was giving a concise post fight interview not too long after getting KOed, and was better off than when Glen put him away. reality is that he was simply KOed, and people didnt want to see that happen.
had smoger stepped in he would have held roy up, his face would still be down for atleast 5-10sec. once he looked up ppl would see he still had no clue where he was at, theyd put him on a stool and maybe he would be back on his feet within a minute.
in other words he was out already and there was nothing to question had smoger stepped in.
also whats up with ppl saying "KOs happen get used to it". im not complaining about knockouts im complaining about unnecessary knockouts, unnecessary damage. yes fighters get KOd and they take punishment but its the refs job to make sure they dont take unnecessary punishment, if he doesnt do that hes not doing his job and should be questioned like anyone whos incompetent at their job.
"if" roy was hurt? the guy was out cold for over a minute, id say he was hurt pretty bad. he might not have died or anything but its one more punch which damage he will have to be deal with after he retires. a punch he didnt need to take. im not babying him or nothing, it really doesnt matter if a ref fails to stop a fight or fails to call a knockdown, warn about clinching etc. a bad call is a bad call and should be questioned.

I don't even get what all the controversy is about, I watched the fight. It was just a few seconds left of the fight and Smoger gave him the benefit of the doub't.
Roy got knocked out cold. SO WHAT? No big deal This is boxing, we all knew it would happen. He is a grown man so stop feeling sorry for him.
what im mad about and what the controversy is about is smoger made a terrible call. its his job to deduct points if someone consistently fouls his oponent, its his job to see if a headbutt was from a punch or a cut, and its his job to stop the fight if a fighter cant intelligenlty defend himself.
the fight was over, he had a fighter in front of him who was out on his feet and it was his job to step in yet he didnt. bcuz of that roy took unnecessary punishment, i dont feel sorry for him im jus saying its smogers job to make sure he doesnt take unnecessary punishment and he failed. hense he did a poor job of refereeing and thats what the controversy is about.
i dont see how anyone can even try to make a case smoger didnt **** up.

Smoger shouldn't have to explain himself. Steve is the best referee in the fight game and has earned the right to ref it any way he deems fit. Nothing wrong with what happened to Roy Jones and had Roy Jones died in the ring, it would of been his own fault. Roy Jones can do what he wants but it's all on him now.

If Smoger thought that Roy was just playin, then thats a problem, everyone saw that Roy was out on his feet including Lebedev which is why he stepped away and looked at Smoger first, i agree that Smoger is a great ref but on this occasion he was wrong, one punch too many and just let Roy fall flat on his face. everyone makes mistakes and he made one that night.
