  • Countdown to Jones-Tarver III

Did anyone watch that documentary after boxing last night of Tarver-Jones III? It was previewing it and showed a bunch of different analysts talking about the fight, what it means, why it's important, etc.

Anyways, it was really good. One bad thing that stuck with me though was what Emmanuel Steward said abot Roy. He said he has seen guys' chins/brains get ****ed up from one perfect punch and that Roy came back to early vs Glen Johnson, and that he probably has that permanent trait in his brain that will always allow him to get stopped easily. Why'd he have to go and say some **** like that?

I don't know. I could say Roy was just caught be a great punch vs Glen right on the temple. Glen said that he KO'd ppl in SPARRING all the time with that exact temple punch. Plus, Roy took hard punches before the KO and stood up to them.

It was a good doc all in all and Roy seriously has a big nappy beard now. I wonder if he will have that beard for the fight. Looks like a homeless man.

Maybe Manny said it cause he felt it was true. He's a seasoned, excellent trainer who isnt afraid to say the negative stuff along with the good. You cant expect nothing but glowing opinions of jones after two ko losses...there is going to be some neg. along with the rest.

          hmm

Not ones named Roy Jones Jr. Heh...

          Some quotes/facts from the doc:

Roy Jones: "We both know that if he walks away the winner, (he's) the better man."

"It's gon' be freakin' hard to deal with me."

Roy's dad would chase him with pvc pipe and extension cords while he was doing his roadwork.

          Tarver was addicted to crack-*******.

Alton Merkerson said when Roy got KO'd he got the same feeling he had when his buddies were killed by his side in Vietnam.

Tarver tried to get a scholarship in football/basketball but wasn't good enough. Turned pro a boxing at 29 years of age.

Tarver: "Wen Roy won the olympics in 1988, that really truly inspired me."

Roy Sr.:"It's very tough to describe you know wat I mean, without using vulgarity." (speaking on Roy's "loss" in 1988 olympics)

Roy Jones Jr. used to carry a knife with him in case he needed to kill his dad. That's how scared he was of his dad when he was a kid.

Tarver: "My skills is very deceptive because I take my time."

Okay, are you forgetting how hard a time he had in their first fight?? So many are acting like all they remember was the 2nd fight and Tarvers so called lucky punch..when the first fight was a real battle for Jones, one that I scored a draw.
I actually hope Jones wins the rubber match, but wont assume he will. It wont be easy, not by any stretch of the imagination.

                    hmm

Jones had a lot of weight issues to deal with in the 1st fight. If Roy and Tarver had fought at 190 or so, Tarver might hve eeked 3 rounds out max. But, as it was, Tarver made it a close fight.

As far as the lucky punch goes...whether it was lucky or not, it was devastating and may have had a real bad affect on Roy. Manny said the two KO's close 2gether is what could affect Roy in a permanent way. If that's the case, Roy is going to have to be really sharp and aware to win this fight.

I'll say this. Whatever Roy's best is at 36, after suffering two KO's close together, after accelerating his decline by losing muscle mass, that is what he will be at. He'll be at his best.

Some positives I hear and see in Roy's favor are that Tarver looked really slow in his last fight with Glen, and Roy Sr. is in Roy's camp saying there are some technical changes to Roy's gme going on. Also, in Roy's mind, this is life or death. He has a good mindset for this fight it would seem.

Of course, Tarver has that annoying style and also has that great equalize in his left hand...but, if Roy isn't shot, he can avoid Tarver's biggest weapon.
