No 2001:A Space Odyssey which many have as the #1 movie of all time?
And no Dr.Strangelove?!--the darkest of dark comedies--and it came out right after the Cuban Missile Crisis, when many thought the whole world was about to be nuked.Comment

I agree with practically every word in the first paragraph, although there are a couple of other films that could be included in a "greatest" debate.Goodfellas belongs no where near the first two Godfather films. The first is arguably the best movie ever, with only Citizen Kane in the discussion with it IMO, and the sequel is easily the best sequel ever.
It's mind boggling that Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas all didn't win Best Picture at the Oscars. That's inexcusable that not one won that Oscar.
The "Oscars" are a joke. After a lifetime of great films, Scorcese finally won best director for "The Departed"; none of his films (!) has won an Academy Award. Pacino finally won an "Oscar" for his role in "Scent of a Woman," not for either "Michael Corleone" performances, nor for his role in "Dog Day Afternoon." A joke, I tells ya....Comment

Kubrick's my favorite director. "Clockwork" is my fave, with "Dr. Strangelove" a very close second. "The Killing" is clumped in there, too. "Paths of Glory", then "Full Metal Jacket." "2001" is an awesome achievement (I read the Arthur C. Clarke novel also; makes things much clearer), but it's not very accessible. Of course, who can forget "The Shining." Even his lesser known stuff is great: "Lolita" and "Barry Lyndon." Despite its shortcomings "Eyes Wide Shut" has grown on me. Last, but not least, "Spartacus." What an artist....Comment

If Eyes Wide Shut was not so great, we can't blame him. It was "edited' heavily upon his death. Some say what he was revealing was the cause of that event. But better not go there either.
Lolita and Spartacus in their own ways were masterpieces as well IMO. Barry Lyndon was about the only thing he did that did nothing for me, except the visuals.Comment

Back to boxing.
Re: Raging Bull. Just saw that LaMotta said he trained DeNiro for a whole year before filming. Did 1000 rounds with him during that year. That's about 3 rounds everyday.
Scorsese said all opponents in the film were real boxers. I recognized Eddie Mustafa Muhammed.
The 2nd disc with the special edition version has lots of good stuff. Shows how some of the fights in the film match up with the real ones.
Of course I found some erroneous stuff. Film implies he KOed Tony Janeiro when it was a UD.Comment

The most amazing thing about De Niro's performance is the physical transformation in the movie. He got into that good shape, and then ballooned for the end. The dedication is tremendous.Back to boxing.

allow me to butt in as what i remembered that was one if not the primary selling point of the movie back then, how robert de niro stuffed his body to looked like jake of late. i believe it became the benchmark for actors who wanted to show dedication to their profession. now thats a good topic really but i guess not on here. prolly that dedication was the inspiration of christian bale playing the role of ****y to shed down weights.Comment
