good to hear glad alot of ppl saw the fight. props to BOTH fighters even tho berto held way too much IMO... funny thing is that the holding probably played against him as he was landing some hard shots too but then again maybe he just never recovered from all the shots ortiz landed? anyways, ortiz really needs to work on that jab and stop reaching so much with that lead left...then he'll be pretty complete.

It was foolish of Golden Boy Promotions to risk Victor Ortiz' career like that. What if he had lost? If I was the promoter I would have let Berto vs. Ortiz marinate for another year or two.

It doesn't matter what kind of rating HBO got. I am in the business of making money not pleasing the hardcore fans.

What I always wonder is if these numbers include HBO Latino.
If they do, I could see someone saying the "connections" they have say something different, since they forget to count HBO Latino.

The live figure was 1.6 million average viewers live, anytime you get someone who adds up the live figure and replays they are trying to spin it to make it look better.

BoxingScene.com was advised that Alvarez-Hatton was the most watched "Boxing After Dark" main event in two years. The HBO audience of 1.4 million was the most for a "Boxing After Dark" main event since James Kirkland vs. Joel Julio, which delivered 1.4 million viewers on March 7, 2009.

Here HBO also combined the replay and the live viewers but didn't even acknowledge they did it. They tried to say that it was the most watched B.A.D in 2 years which is crap if they are going by live viewers.


February 19, 2011 - HBO Boxing After Dark - Donaire-Montiel - 1.020 million total live viewers

8-7-2010 - HBO - Boxing After Dark - Devon Alexander-Andriy Kotelnik - 1.057 million live viewers

8-22-2009 - HBO - Boxing After Dark - Paulie Malignaggi vs. Juan Diaz - 1.139 Million Live Viewers

6-27-09 - HBO - Victor Ortiz-Marcos Maidana - 1.1 million viewers

4/25/2009 - HBO - Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Gerry Penalosa - averaged 990,000 live viewers

All those fights did a better live rating then Canelo vs. Hatton on HBO B.A.D since 2/14/2009. If they had just said "It's the best combined rating in the past 2 years" I wouldn't have a problem with that.

John Chavez gets the ratings directly from Nielsen Media Research. If he see's the numbers aren't matching up should he not call them out? What other boxing journalist out there puts out boxing ratings regularly without getting an HBO press release?


I do believe the numbers from this past weekend look legit and I will tell you why.

1. If you notice in this new press release they say the viewers are "1.5M Live".

2. I don't know if you know this but it was an HBO free preview weekend, from what I understand Nielson doesn't count the free preview viewers but even if they are counted it's 1.5M legit eye balls watching the fight.

3. the Morales vs. Maidana created a lot of buzz 2 weeks ago and that carried over a lot of momentum over to this past weekend. It reflected on the ESPN2 ratings.

03/18/11 - ESPN2 - FNF's - 522,000 average viewers

03/25/11 - ESPN2 - FNF's - 421,000 average viewers

04/01/11 - ESPN2 - FNF's - 466,000 average viewers

04/15/11 - ESPN2 - FNF's - 601,000 average viewers


There are a lot of fans that like to know the ratings because it's a great gauge to see how the popularity of the sport is going, the same goes for purses, PPV buys and paid gates.

So before you start questioning me as if I want to see boxing do bad or HBO do bad that's not the case. I'm just all for transparency, if there are figures that don't match I think it's better we question them and post the actual number. It can be purses,ratings,paid gates,PPV buys even if the truth might not sit well with us because we all want to see boxing do great.

I don't see how it would dissuade any boxing fans to stop watching all because of how many OTHER people are watching. I believe the numbers are legit too especially with the free weekend. that was GOLDEN for hbo - will probably help them get a bigger budget from corporate. but corporate knows how many peopel are REALLY watching anyway . . .
