Comments Thread For: Froch's Split From Hennessy Could Become a Legal War

A few days ago, WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch officially confirmed that he broke away from longtime promoter Mick Hennessy of Hennessy Sports. Froch announced his free agent status to the UK media. He also disclosed his plan to promote himself for the two remaining bouts in the Super Six tournament. He returns on June 4 in Atlantic City against Glen Johnson in the Super Six semi-finals. Froch never made any indications on whether or not he plans to sign with a new promoter.

I'm amazed these 2 split, the most legit boxer / promoter combo in the sport.

I'm surprised that he wants to be a free agent for his next two fights. Maybe he could get more money that way, but maybe he'll get less because of not having someone with experience fighting his corner and negotiating for him.

He should look into signing a deal with one of the US promoters. Or Warren, who, for all his faults, would at least get Froch some much-deserved UK exposure.

this was a good time to split if there was one. since he is already having his next two fights promoted for free anyway. he won't have to drop much money into them. and if he ends up winning this tournament, he comes out as a HOT free agent in demand of a huge money fight probably here stateside. Then he can go back to England and fill a huge soccer stadium somewhere. I think he realized as good and fair of a promotor as mick is, he can't really do anything more for froch at this point in his career. He knows if he wants to really get a huge fight he needs a promotor who can pull some serious strings, or, just risk doing it himself and keep all the money.

what does he have to negotiate ... his next fights are done as long as he beats glen.

i heard him on the radio talking about his promotional issues a little ...

imo sounds like the best move he couldve made. and its something he should have done a long time ago. promoters job is to promote and carl def has not been promoted properly. he should be much more popular then he is

I love it!!!! We need more boxers who can handle their *****, when you get to a stage in your career where everyone knows who you are then you don't need to continuing signing a long term contract with anyone.

The officials and location chosen for the fight with AA were a big deal and probably will be for the Ward fight.

I agree that he should've been promoted better but that doesn't mean he shouldn't try and find a new promoter. Warren would get him a lot more UK attention and I think some of the American promoters could do more for him than he could do himself. I also think fighters being self-promoted can take their attention off of fighting, which should be their only real concern.

After Calzaghe split with Warren he did a deal with Roy Jones that didn't make him a fantastic amount of money (50% split of what turned out to be dissapointing PPV sales). I think Warren would've handled that situation a lot better, sometimes fighters don't do the right thing when self-promoted even if they're sure about who they're going to fight.

If he signs with Warren, he has a good chance of Sky coverage and becoming a bigger name in the UK. Then after the Super Six he has options such as DeGale and Cleverly.

Thanks for the interview, haven't heard it so will take a listen in a bit.

def worth the listen, he doesnt get into great detail about anything in the interview but he does skim across quite a number of topics including sky, mick and the end of the super 6. as for the next fight he says dibella is already lead promter for venue etc. and he expects goosen will be the lead promoter for the ward fight. the final is def going to be stateside and rumors are its going to be at madison square gardens. so i dunno how much there would be left to negotiate besides approval of the officials (which is key) etc. i think its a good move, but time will tell i guess

all good comments here, and true. you could tell froch has been irritated since the abraham fight. froch is looking around at his english fellows who have not achieved NEARLY as much in the ring, yet are getting paid much more.
