Boxing is the theatre of the unexpected and this past weekend we saw two of the game's promising champions upset as WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and WBO featherweight king Juan Manuel Lopez both fell to brave Mexicans in dramatic fashion. Berto was edged over twelve wild, knockdown-filled rounds by 24-year old Victor Ortiz while miles away on the island of Puerto Rico Lopez would be upended by former champion Orlando Salido, who dropped him hard in the 5th round before finishing him off controversially in the 8th. As a fan of Berto his loss doesnt bother me as much...
Not a fan of Juanma necessarily but his loss bothered me more only because I was really looking forward to the undefeated matchup between him and Gamboa.
I planned on going to that.
It kind of lost its sizzle now. -

I think what was better for boxing was how good Golden Boy came off in all of this. Arum is an old, sour, rich man who doesn't give a **** about the sport other than how much more money he can squeeze out of it.
Everyone criticized them for making this Bert vs Ortiz fight and it might go down as fight of the year.
Hopefully they will understand to give the fans the fights they want and not worry so much about giving their precious fighters an L on their record.Comment

I think down the line it`ll be great for the pair of them most fighters learn from their defeats and it actually wakes them up to things they were doing wrong especially in their preparation.Comment

I became a bigger fan of Berto through his loss and lost no respect for Juanma. These were exciting fights, that's what should count the most in the sport.
If Juanma wins the rematch then a Gamboa fight is still a mega match in sporting terms.Comment

Larry Merchant is right. These promoters are so concern with getting soft touch matches for their fighters that, the boxers themselves are getting too comfortable. I am soooo excited and happy about what has went down in boxing these past weeks. Segura, Ishido, Rubio, Ortiz, Salido.... all of their wins are great for the sport because now, these promoters are going to second guess who they think are competitive and who are not because I'm sure all the underdogs are amped up about this and are training harder to win against all odds. If I was considered an underdog in a fight I would train and try my best to win because that is what you are supposed to do when given an opportunity. Seize it! Would be something if Shane beat Pac and Rhodes beat Canelo. that would teach them to stop setting up their matches.Comment

You may think Berto sucks but he took some huge shots the entire night and finished on his feet. He voluntarily backed into the ropes and dared Ortiz to hit him!! You may hate him, spit on him, etc but you cannot question his heart and chin anymore. Any lesser fighter wouldn't have made it 12 rounds...Originally posted by stickupkidComment
