Comments Thread For: Fighting Words: Berto, Ortiz: Proof and Reasonable Doubts

by David P. Greisman - The burden of proof was not just on the challenger two years removed from his chin being tested and his heart being questioned.

The burden of proof was also on the man he was challenging, an undefeated titleholder who had knocked out 21 of his 27 opponents.

There were reasons to doubt both Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto.

Ortiz had wilted in a firefight with Marcos Maidana in June 2009, unable to compensate when his punches could put Maidana down but not out early; unable to cope with Maidana’s pressure and power as the fight went further; unable to continue when the odds of coming back were getting longer.

Ortiz had been a reclamation project ever since: stoppage wins over safer opponents in Antonio Diaz and Hector Alatorre, a clear unanimous decision over a hobbled, aged Nate Campbell, a knockout of a damaged Vivian Harris and a disappointing majority draw against Lamont Peterson.

Berto would be a step up from Ortiz’s recent run.

Then again, those who doubted Berto did so because of his own level of opposition.

He’d been selected years ago as a potential heir apparent in the welterweight division of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. And so HBO put him on air, pushed him hard and paid him handsomely. [Click Here To Read More]

STFU with that 'Berta' ****. He may not of won but Berto took hellacious shots from Ortiz and still finished the fight on his feet, unlike your 'heros' Cotto and Juanma. Cotto quit against Margarito and Juanma got KTFO. You are the ******est SOB on the planet. Please go away and take your PR propaganda with you. So far, you've been owned by Mexico. Bend over b*tch, bubba's comin' for you...

Berta has and will all was be a little *****. So stop yer cryin. As for juanma and cotto losing, who cares. They both never made excuses for their loses and all great champions have loses on their records. Berta as mayweather was never a great champ. Both have made a name for themselves fighting subpar opposition.

berta is a hype-job and has been vastly overpaid and coddled by HBO while martinez is manhandled by HBO to take tough fight after tough fight.

                **** berta!!!

lol owned! But anyway, Im still a fan of Berto he put up a great fight, just his stamina is pretty ****, clinched in the last 6 rounds non stop. And Id like to aplogize for PRBoxingCotto on behalf of all Boricuas. That guy talks pure nonsense in every single post he writes. Dont start Rican bashing because of a couple of ignorant cheerleaders, youd just be lowering yourself to their level. I see alot of hate in these forums from mainly Mexicans and Ricans, like a bunch of pmsing little kids with no class or respect wtsoever. Damn Shame
