He did look like a beast out there. I guess, Berto already was a grown man when they were in amateurs (156 vs. 132 for Ortiz). Bu Ortiz cam in at 156 last night and looked all power. I'd love to see Paul Williams vs. Ortiz, if not, I'd settle for Ortiz vs. Cintron.

Both Garcia brothers arguing with each other helped to get the max out of there fighters and it showed up BIGTIME last night.

Ortiz was 161, Berto was 156. All credit to Ortiz. I said it before, I think Ortiz has a better skill set. I did pick Berto to win, but I thought Victor definitely could. Berto looked shook up after the first round. Not scared, but his legs were not fully under him. Hopefully he comes back and gets back on the winning track. Ortiz beat his ass today, and deserves some credit. Great fight Vic.

Let's Not Get Carried Away Based on 1 Fight!!!!
Now Ortiz is a beast because he beat an unproven guy who had the same struggle against Luiz Collazo??? I like Ortiz and was impressed by his performance but let's not jump the gun. When people started putting Pacquiao's name with Mayweather was 2008, based on what he did from 2003to 2008. I wasn't that big on Berto but in the last two years Ortiz has to answer for the Maidana and Peterson fights. One good night doesn't erase two years. Let him have two more good nights at least before you crown him anything.
Recent history, and to show you how ****** Max Kellerman is. Based on one fight (Urango) he said on air that Manny should fight Alexander. He said the same about Bradley based on the (Holt) fight in which Bradley was dropped twice never mind his 11 KOs in 27 fights. Then he said Manny should fight Berto based on the Quitana fight. Now Ortiz is the next star we are trying to CREATE. Let them earn it in the ring with a string of three or four good fights, like back in the old days 60s, 70s, and 80s. Stars are born not made.
So let last night be a lesson for the Haters who think that Manny shouldn't be fighting proven guys like Cotto, Clottey, Margarito, and Mosley. But instead he should be fighting Alexander, Bradley, Berto, and now Ortiz and again I ask based on what? Talent? Potential? Let those guys build their resumes like Cotto, Clottey, Margarito, and Mosley. Let them put together a streak of three or four solid performances and then and only then put their name in the Pacquiao or No-Mannyweather sweepstakes...
That being said, Ortiz had a great night and is on the right track again.

Ortiz looked like a beast, and not a beast because he won this fight. I wasn't a big fan of any of those two, because they were hyped up too much before they even showed (let alone proved) anything. But Ortiz is on his way back from the controversy of the past couple of years, and that what makes great champions, not the stories about troubled childhood and careful promotion as a next great fill-the-blank-American fighter. Picking up belts and beating strongest guys in the division along the way also helps.

WOW. What a shocker. Not shocked that Berto looked so bad 'cause I knew he had a hole in his armor not being able to withstand the relentless assualt of a pressure fighter and poor footwork backing up more than one step.
I've been a Berto fan since 2006 but he did disappoint me. His legs looked shocked by the 3rd round! Hopefully he comes back stronger and works on his weaknesses. I was horrified that he didn't pop the jab out nearly at all. That fast jab is usually what keeps his opponent uncomfortable because with it's speed it lands quite easily and sets up the right hand.
So, Victor looked very composed and we know he can now face a boxer. I hesitate to call it a brawl last night. He was just a good pressure fighter...great really. I look forward to following Victor's career. I would love to see Victor spank Margacheato. I actually would like to see Ortiz vs. Mosley. Problem is that when a guy fights Pacman and loses and makes 5 million, why is he going to want to come back and fight Ortiz on standard HBO for $100k or so. Especially in the twilight of his career.
Anyway, entertaining fight.
And just for the hell of it...yeah JuanMa was rocked, but at least let the guy go down before stopping the fight!Last edited by speedgsx98; 04-17-2011, 12:30 PM.

I was so happy for the young Ortiz last night and just as I had mentioned in a thread yesterday, we would have to see how Berto would react to someone who could match his power and we saw the result. It seemed he just never fully recouped from round 1 even though he hit Ortiz with a major league shot midway through the fight and Ortiz returned the favor later in that very round. It was a great fight and both fighters showed tons of heart, but Berto is nuts if he thinks he is ready for Pacquiao. Pacquiao is twice as fast and his shots come from too many angles, I doubt he would last 3 rounds. Now Ortiz might really be a great match-up with Pac but I would like to see him fight Brandon Rios at a catch weight or for Brandon to come up a few pounds, that would be a good fight IMO>Last edited by doninlouisiana; 04-17-2011, 12:47 PM.

If you were man enough to say that Victor had no heart before this fight, then be man enough to say that you were completely wrong. Here's one for the good guys....

I regarded it as a two-way business fight - Ortiz having nothing to lose by moving up in weight, Berto "playing it safe" by fighting yet another 140 lb. fighter, this one hand-picked by HBO.
I thought that a motivated Berto would stop him, while the pampered version would fight as if he knew he had a future date in his back pocket and coast to a decision.
At no point did I really give Ortiz a chance to win, even though I regarded him as the more talented fighter, just one that's a fish out of water at welterweight.
The "problem" with Vic winning is that every ambulance chasing promoter in the world will be racing to the front of the line for their own welterweight to face him.
Anyway, props to Vic and to his team and fans. Hell of a fight last night, and I couldn't be more pleased to have been more wrong about how any of it would turn out.
