When fighters rehydrate after weigh in/fight day.

I'm curious on how these guys sometimes are able to put on twenty pounds over night... It can't possibly just be water?... Right?... Are they eating massive amount of food?

    Two pounds? Sometimes it's 15 to 20.

Eat a lot, and drink massive amounts of fluids and the water weight comes back.

It's alot more than two pounds.

The weight that fighters lose to make weight is just water weight. Many fighters will deprive themselves of food for several days, take in a limited amount of liquid and then just gorge themselves silly after they've made the weight.

When you see weight-gains of some 15-20 pounds or more then it's a clear sign of them being completely dehydrated at the weigh-in and a solid indicative of them using IV's during the night.

Gatti made a career out of this.

How do you curb this? Weight limits 30 days out, then 21, 14, 7.

I mean I am not so sure same day weigh-ins were better.

A few years ago, I watched Gatti fight a journeyman who had taken the bout with Arturo on short notice (I forget the guy's name). I remember the commentators remarking that Gatti was about twenty pounds over his weigh-in weight. The two men were comparable height and build, but I recall Arturo being visibly larger than his opponent. It was a slaughter. Gatti tore through the poor guy like he wasn't even there.

I think you're referring to Joey Gamache. Here's the synopsis on Boxrec:

                  * The weight disparity on the day of the fight was so great that it resulted in a popular outcry against Gatti.
                  * This violent knockout landed Gamache in the hospital for a week and ended his career.

It's pretty hard i would imagine to combat.. poor Herbie Hyde used to fight at HW and was outweighed by a good 20-35 pounds, he even said he would destroy Vitali and wasn't impressed with him if they were the same size. Not that HW has a weight limit but still..

Even if Margarito is slow as hell.. he still hit pacquaio that 20 pound difference showed at the end of the fight
