On the undercard of very first pro boxing event I was ever at in the USA, there was a local white fighter facing a Black boxer from another country, I think Nigeria or some other country in Africa. I was just a small boy at that time, there with my uncle who loves boxing.
Something that really struck me as unusual was a group of a dozen or so very vocal African-American boxing fans sitting beside us, rooting for the Black clubfighter from another country to beat the local White American clubfighter in this undercard fight.
Like my uncle, they were mainly to support the local African-American fighter in the main event. But it struck me as strange that they were supporting the fighter from another country on this undercard fight, who I overheard them saying they had never heard of before, to beat the local American white guy!
Why do African-American boxing fans not support White American boxers like Pavlik and Litzau? Why would they root for a Black fighter from another country to beat a local White boxer?
Is that racist on their part?
