you're supposed to rely on support for national heritage, NOT racial . . . mexicans don't distinguish between black and white. look at mexican and PR - they have people who are white as can be, to basically black! they don't distinguish, why should america?

other countries distinguish just as much as america does.

the puerto ricans that look more like TITO TRINIDAD and less like RICKY MARTIN would agree with me.

so would the non traditional or ginger mexicans. if a mexican doesn't look like margarito, barrera, morales, or a ginger, he gets no support.

if shane mosley's last name was VASQUEZ or GONZALEZ he'd still receive minimal support.

Now, regarding the topic, I think it depends on the fighter. If a fighter is good and becomes popular, people support him. Right now, I don't think there are many black guys stepping up in the game. Think of it this way, Hopkins and Mayweather may be black, but they are American's. So, to say black people don't support black fighters is kinda ridiculous. Puerto Ricans support their own, Mexicans support their own, Filipinos support their own and Americans support their own. But then there are special fighters that cross over and gains support from all people.

Look, I am white but I have supported over the years old warriors like: Holyfield, Tyson, Gatti, Ward, Morales, Barrera, Foreman, Trinidad, Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Tapia, Ali, Frazier, Duran, Ron Lyle, Salvador Sanchez, Meldrick Taylor, etc. Now I support guys like Donaire, JMM, Cotto, Pacquiao, Morales, Maidana, Katsidis, Lemieux, Gamboa, Juanma, George 'Monk' Foreman III, Bradley, Martinez, Canelo, etc.

I could really give two ****s where a fighter comes from or what his ethnicity is, if they are warriors, I like them. I don't think it has anything to do with race, I think it has to do with entertainment. If a fighter is boring or an arrogant prink (or in the case of Broner, er, I mean Boner, both boring and arrogant), then I won't like the guy but that doesn't mean I don't necessarily support him. I watch Hopkins to see him lose and damn, that old f**ker refuses to go down (that's what I get for not liking the personality of the guy). But anyway, it's pretty simple, you can't lump black people as a group. They come from all over the world and their just aren't that many right now that are inspiring people like some of the other fighters right now...

i don't know about black communities in general but based on boxingsene community and other boxing forums, 99% of black posters are floyd fans...and majority of them will most likely defend floyd when somebody says something negative about floyd.

i have at least 8-10 black boxing fans that i keep in constant communication with. funny thing is, only two of them like mayweather. the rest are pac or neutral fans.

so i guess you need to widen your lens of perception a bit.

What you're saying is ridiculously ******. You're saying in order for a black fighter to be supported by you, they have to act ******, ignorant, obscene and then you guys will "love him". If thats true, thats ****ing sad.

All it takes is being entertaining in the ring and sure, a little charisma never hurts because if someone is just loud outside of the ring and ****ing boring inside, the only thing they are is just hated.

Anyone that feels he/she speaks for an entire race needs to go back to school and retake the 3rd grade again.

I'm going out of the limb and agree with lamont on this one.. he's totally right, they get no support.. but i'm going to say reason is cause black fighters now days (with the exeption of mayb berta) are al defensive first mentality type of fighters that creat little to no emotions watching their fights... other than the occasional yawn.. which i'm not even sure that's an emotion.. and i'm sure i'll have all the haters saying i dont appreciate the art of "hitting and not getting hit".. but i also appreciate the art of stepping up to the plate and taking big fights.. regardless of the money.. keep winning and the money will come.. create your fanbase dont live off of others.. and claim you're the cashcow..

So i personally feel it's their own faults for their semi-boring type of fighting styles.. create some drama, win some battles.. and then open and complain about your fanbase.. that is 1 on many reasons why the HW division was what it was in the black HW days.. KO'S left and right and best facing the best..

Granted boxing is a business and i'm aware boring or less exciting fighters will keep coming up on the short end unless they can become half actors and sell a fight as the fight of the year.. even though to true boxing knowledge it's just going to be a glorified sparrin session, vs old, small or overmatched competition.

Paul Williams is exactly what you described. He fought the tough fights, he worked his way up the ranks, he's not loud and flashy and he's an offense first kind of guy.

Yet, he still had no FANBASE.

I'm telling you it's more about economics than anything else.
