Like I said earlier this is just one of many new drugs that have been developed and many are only detected in blood @sshole! I just chose this one as an example of why blood testing is needed, up until recently this drug was not detected in urine.hey genius, guess what? IT IS DETECTABLE BY URINE TESTS!
AICA ribonucleotide or AICAR (aminoimidazole carboxamide ribonucleotide) is an intermediate in the generation of inosine monophosphate, which acts as an AMP-activated protein kinase agonist.[1] It stimulates glucose uptake and increases the activity of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases α and β in skeletal muscle tissue,[2] as well as suppressing apoptosis by reducing production of reactive oxygen compounds inside the cell.[3]
In 2008, researchers at the Salk Institute discovered that AICAR given to experimental mice significantly improves their performance in endurance-type exercise, apparently by converting fast-twitch muscle fibers to the more energy-efficient, fat-burning, slow-twitch type. They also looked at the administration of GW 501516 (also called GW1516) in combination with AICAR. Given to mice that did not exercise, this combination activated 40% of the genes that were turned on when mice were given GW1516 and made to exercise. This suggests it may be possible to obtain some of the benefits of exercising without actually exercising.[4] Because of the enhanced endurance effects, this could potentially be used by athletes to enhance their performance. One of the lead researchers from this study has developed a urine test to detect it and has made the test available to the International Olympic Committee, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has added AICAR to the prohibited list from 2009 onwards.[5]Last edited by Wapacman; 04-08-2011, 09:05 PM.Comment

wow sensitive much?
the urine tests for that PED were developed since 2009. that's TWO YEARS AGO. that isn't recent.
during that time (2009), the effectiveness of blood tests were highly questionable in that THEY CAUGHT NO ONE. it only recently that they've actually caught people (two or three out of hundreds of takers).
only people with an agenda would insist on using a test which:
1. is invasive as opposed to urine tests.
2. has real medical risks involved.
3. is more expensive (as if all boxers have thousands of dollars at their disposal)
4. has a questionable track record.Comment

If the above is true why is blood work done in olympic sports and in many non olympic sports?wow sensitive much?

duh! politics!
just look at the chinese athletes dude. ESPECIALLY the females.
they look more like men.
Victor Conte himself boasted of flying circles around those vaunted blood tests for years.
don't you know that other than boxers, he had other olympic athletes as clients?
yet in spite of having super steriods that allowed him to cheat the system, he was still caught, as well as those who took his juice.
PEDs with the magnitude pac is accused of taking would be impossible to hide, especially with him being surrounded by both friends and strangers all the time.
if he was taking something, he would have been caught by now, just like Victor Conte was.Comment

conte has been duping the olympic blood tests since the early 2000s. these are the very same type of tests that floyd is insisting on aren't they?Comment

I respect all the articals you are throwing at me, but I just disagree. Blood testing does have its place in busting dopers. We can agree to disagree.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...294317884.html

yes, blood testing does have its place in busting dopers.
and in fairness to blood testing, they are indeed improving it since as i mentioned before they are starting to catch cheats with it.
BUT.
what is wrong here is the misplaced notion that blood testing somehow would change the game.
the fact is:
1. though blood testing is improving, it still has a long way to go.
2. at this point, the ONLY thing blood tests can detect that urine can't is HGH, the benefits of which are even highly questionable.
in short? blood testing is a grey issue with too many unanswered questions to make a strong case. but somehow is being considered the holy grail of drug testing.
P.S.
yeah, let's end this with agreeing to disagree. so far we didn't end up in a shouting match and i'd like us to end our conversation that way.Last edited by AFighter4U; 04-08-2011, 10:32 PM.Comment

Great...just what we need another em "ped" thread...
It's pretty crazy, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, mma, hockey, all test for peds and they all catch people every year ( with urine none the less ) yet if your on any of their fan based websites they don't really talk about peds too much. Either they're all really ****ing ******, or "some" of us boxing fans are...
Talk about over blown, boxing is in serious trouble if the so called "fans" can't even face a relatively small problem like peds without turning into raving lunatics.Comment

but boxing commision is not you... like it or not USADA is not welcome by all boxing commision. get over it already and enjoy boxing WITHOUT THE UNwelcome USADA....
