    • Robin Reid should've got the decision over Calzaghe when they fought too. Calzaghe doesn't have one good win on his resume over a prime, elite fighter and that's just reality. Deal with it. Kessler is an okay win, but that's where his supposedly good resume ends at. And Ward handled Kessler with ease.

      • This thread has given me such joy today. Thankyou Lead Cenobite! Those YouTube clips tickle me silly every time. They're just so ridiculously poe-faced it's genius.

We live in strange times indeed when someone takes so much time and effort to say the same thing different ways about something nobody really cares about - it's inspiring! So thank you again! I could care less about Joe Calzaghe one way or the other and frankly I could care less about your views on boxing but there's something endearing about someone with such a focussed obsession to bring down one man in a virtual world he's probably not even aware of that's quite refreshing. It's also a perfect illustration of why nobody should ever take anything anyone says on an internet forum seriously. Ah, what a world.

Oh, incidentally - can someone tell me why sub-par opponents are referred to as 'tomato cans'?

I know that tomato refers to bleeding. In the old days tomato cans bleed a lot and it's a reference the color of blood. I also suspect it has to do with how easily tomatos bruise.

: GO IN THE WATER - "To take a dive, intentionally lose or throw a fight. 'They say he's a tank artist, a tomato can, a guy that goes in the water for a few bucks..' (Pete Hamill, 'Flesh and Blood,' 1977)" From the "New Yawk Tawk" section of the "Facts on File Dictionary of American Regionalisms: Local Expressions from Coast to Coast" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 2000).

            • This thread is great. Out of the 46 fighters calzaghe destroyed, each of their fans hated calzaghe. Made his fights more interesting lol just like mayweather.

              They hate on success.

                More theories:

-"People used tomatoe cans for shooting practice. So in the world of fighting, it is used to describe a person who is basically that... "target practice" for a fighter who has supposed need for a stepping stone. "

-""kick the can" is an old game. It used to be said that "Cans" were put into fights to get kicked around... "

                • I have to concede, while his seeming mania is worrying, it was the sudden influx of 'man and boy' (translation, neophyte) Calzaghe groupies to this forum post-November 2007 which brought Lead Cenobite to all this.

Without them, Joe would have simply closed out his career and retired with the increased general respect of most boxing fans on this forum (which has come to him in retirement) and a HOF spot guaranteed and disputed by only the harshest of pundits.

But, oh no, we couldn't have a pleasant ending like that. Because they had to come here to the actual boxing forum where people talk about actual boxing, tipsy on BBC Sports Personality Of The Year hoopla, to declare Joe a Knight Of The Fistic Realm, proclaim his All-Time-Greatness as very arguably one of the best boxers ever to box in boxing and chug warm mugs of his seminal fluid.

FRKO. KrisSilver. abadger. _Ricky_. Skilled deepthroaters one and all. And there were many more. How I curse the names of those who brought us to this.

Joe Calzaghe is a European Regional Champ who for the majority of his career fought WBO appointed mandatory mismatches. Some guys were even coming off losses and getting a shot at the title. This path of least resistance to success is being followed by Lucian Bute now. In a few years time, he will be a 15 title defense All-time great Canadian, nevermind that he fought a buncha receded hairlined Caucasian's nobody has ever heard of like Brian McGee. You'd think he would be stepping it up after Andrade and Miranda, but he is stepping down in comp.
