A writer who covers shows- it can get pricey as you have to go to the location, pay for your room food etc and generally do not get paid for your efforts

    just writing articles- nothing

    cover local- cost of gas

I don't get paid for my TV write ups but do for video

      Apparently, not much.

Just joking, I admire a lot of the writters because of their determination. I've tried to write articles and do interviews but it was time consuming and I'm not very patient.

No disrespect, but a ****** could make something that would "wow" a professor. Maybe they were being nice. Maybe your communication problem w/your professors is your fault or maybe they suck.

            Degree = training
I highly doubt that a ****** would be able to write something to "wow" a professor. Maybe you've spent your time studying in universities and dislike those who attain status without it, I don't know. But to say that the only way that you can be a writer is to have a degree is rediculous and closed minded. Should I assume that you have this stellar piece of paper hanging on your wall yet you still find yourself at $10 an hour jobs? Why the hate? People live their lives differently and experience different things and are exposed to different things through life. That degree just says that you should be able to write well, not that you can and do write well..............Rockin'

Here are some of the articles that I wrote up with NO COLLEGE DEGREE.

                    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
--Sechew Powell, doing what it takes to be the peoples champion.--

I wandered down to the Legendary Kronk gym in hopes of interviewing Jermaine Taylor, the reigning Middleweight champion. Wacthing Jermaine work I was impressed. But there was another who caught my eye amongst the many talented fighters working in the sweltering heat, that being Sechew Powelll. As I watched him move around the ring while shadow boxing I could not help but notice the highly techincal work that he was exhuming. His punches flowed freely and sharply, his head moving and bobbing underneath of the imaginary punches coming for him.

Sechew made his way to Kronk from Brooklyn, Newyork where he had begun his boxing career as a highly decorated amatuer. Winning 152 of 159 amatuer contests it was obvious in watching his work ethic that the man had been brought up and trained well in the fight game. Sechew has won every national tournament offered in the United State and has had numerous appearances on the international stage while representing the United States of America. This has prepared this young man extremely well for his venture into the professional ranks where he is now enjoying great exposure as well as a 19-0(11) record.

I sat to talk with Sechew after his workout and found him to be a very likeable and kind person. His smile belied the intensity that was shown inside of the squared circle only minutes earlier yet when looking him into his eyes while he speaks of his career the desire and intensity was easily seen. He wants to be the best and has taken every step that he could to get to that point.

Powell is handled by Lou Dibella, a big time promoter with the right connections to move such a talent. Dibella had set it up for Sechew to display his talents on the world scale as he arranged for Sechew to fight on Showtimes ShoBox- The Next Generation.

Powells first assignment from Sho-Box was to fight one Grady Brewer 17-8 (11). This was considered an oppertunity to showcase his skills against what seemed to be an average fighter. Sechew found difficulty in the pug and also found himself sitting on the canvas in the 5th round. Powell would rise from the canvas to win himself a split decision victory but the trouble that he had with the opponent seemed to leave doubt in some peoples mind.

In his next bout he would derail one George Armenta by Unanimuous decision before stepping again into the Sho-Box arena. There he faced Patrick Thompson and easily won an 8 round decision. Then Powell stepped up to face his most formidable oppponent to that date. He squared off in a much anticipated bought with the K-9, Cornelious Bundrage, fighting out of the Kronk Gym. An early barrage of punishing blows left the K-9 incapacitated as Powell stopped him in the 1st round but not before each were dropped in a rare double knockdown. But the questions still lingered about his chin from the knock down in the Brewer fight as well as the Bundrage bout and Sechew wanted so badly to erase any doubts that the public may have of him.

He would next face a tough assignment against a former Jr. Middleweight champion named Santiago Samaniego, a tough fighting and hard hitting man who, while growing in age, still possesed the skills and power to be dangerous. Again Powell shined as he stopped him in the early part of the 3rd round. But questions still remained.

Yet aother tough bout would folow pitting him against a strong and durable young fighter named Archak TerMeliksetian again on the Sho-Box series. "I saw this as the perfect oppertunity to erase any doubts that the public may have had from that earlier knockdown against Brewer. I wanted to quite the critics and show everybody how talented I really am." Powell made the best of the night, fighting hard to bring home another one sided decison in a strong and hard fought bout.

It was time to step it up again as Powell faced Robert Fraizer, a tough fighter from Rochester, Newyork. "I knew that this could be a tough fight for me. I mean look at the guys that he had faced before me. Winky Wright, Charles Murray, Felix Sturm....." Sechew reclines in his chair abit as a large smile graces his face. "I handled that with ease." The scorecards of the fight agreed as Sechew posted a lopsided 10 round victory.

Right now Powell stands as the number 5 contender in the IBF but has yet to crack the top 10 in the other organizations. He is among the top 15 in the world ratings but he sees this changing very soon. "Im going to keep fighting strong and show these people exactly what I am made of." Sechew has visions of fighting for the title early next year. He has the right people behind him and the love of a wonderfull girl who stands behind his tough travels through the game.

"It takes a woman who has respect for the occupation to make it all work. I could be away in camp for up to 6 weeks and she is calling me and sending me things that I might need. She is my partner, my friend and my companion." A single woman has brought many a fighter to their knees but Sechew is confident that he has found a good one. "If I call and say that I have broken my headgear or something, shell take care of it and I will have a new one the next day."

Powell is the self proclaimed king of the Sho-Box The next Generation Series and he has right to say that he is. "I have been on there more then anybody, 5 times I fought on the show." Powell loves the exposure as well as how well the network has treated him, "They have been really great to me...."

Sechew Powell is a man on the rise. He is a hungry fighter who is never exactly satisfied until he has reached the peek of his profession. He not only wants to win the belt but more so I believe that he is looking for the fight fans respect everywhere around the world. "I want to be the peoples champion."

Sechew is one the right track and will do everything that is neccesary to reach his goals. With his charisma and personality to go along with his exquisite boxing skills I believe that he will win that belt one day. And if you ever have the chance to sit and talk with him, you would realize that he is a champion of a person aswell. The perfect man to represent the people as champion.
                    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Boxer - Punches, Pain, Persistance and Pride.

If you sign up for this do not for one second believe that this will be easy. Boxers are a special breed of people, under the lights they will war by the ancient manuscript. This sport is time tested; as a test of man, a test of man against man and more to the pont its will against will. It is instinct my man, that keeps you walking forward through a punch. Its the same when you eat one that leaves you looking out of the glaring white window where you see a boxer, hes close yet hes so far. LMAO, when you can tell me that you know exactly what that means then I will for sure know that you've been in there.

You will learn to walk through the punches if you have the balls to stay that long. If you have discovered that then you will certainly know how to block out the pain. In golf you might have a sore shoulder, but in this game you may have a sore and swollen body and face. You must undertand that pain is in the mind. It is certainly in the body but essentially it s the mind that controls what the pain is goingto do. Regular people on the street have no idea of how much pain is controled by the mind. I see the hot stuff suit walkig briskly with his briefcase swining in his hurried state. In the crowded newyork sidewalk it was inevitable that a collision was in the near future. Sure enough, a man exits a conversation and turns walking toward our suit. The man is starttled by the fast approching suit and the mans hand flys up, striking the suit in the mouth. The suit stops instantly and puts his hand to is mouth. Lifting his fingers infront of his face he sees his fingers smeared with blood. The suit instantly begins jumping up and down ranting and raving. The suit lost his cool. In this sport it can cost you alot of pain to lose your cool. Pain, something that you will and must learn to deal with after the fight, there is no time to think about it during the fight. During the fight your mind must be focused on the punches coming in at your body and face. Your mind must be focused on the subtle movements of your opponent, his mechanics and his rythme. But most of all you must be focused on the future, the near future. Of what you want to work offensively and defnsively all in minute fractions of a second. You dont have time to preoccupy your mind with pain.

Before te bell ever rings will you have made a commitment, as a fighter you must finish your sceduled rounds. Whether it be amatuer or pro, spparring or fighting. Alot of people would like to be able to say that that were fighters. The sad part of it is that most of thesepople have never even had a sanctioned bout. Never be one of those guys. These guys will fold in a second when serious trouble sets in. But you, as a fighter must not only not fold but rather come firing as you force your way out of a corner. You signed up to be a fighter, and any fighter that is worth anything will finish his rounds. There is an honor amongst the boxing circle, its the honor of figters. Knowing that we have been in war, won some lost some but always showed up the next day for war again. Against other fighters or the man standing directly infront of you, gloved as you are just waiting for the bell, you know. You know that he knows and likewise, the pride

--Don't Come Barking at this Dog if You Don't Bite!--

Again enetering the Kronk recreation center, I notice how silent it is as the men sit playing cards at a table and another man performs his costodial duties sweeping the floors. The nice woman greets me from her desk and I sign in and make my way down the stairs. Again the red and gold lets me know that I am in a very historic place for the Detroit community aswell as the boxing world.

Looking around the gym I see the trainers and nice Mr. Logan in his same position he is every day. A new female boxer moves about the ring akwardly as another female boxer punches the mitts with her coach. SMACK!!!!!! The woman throws a beautiful right hand, crashing into the mitt and forcing the trainers hand back violently. Shaking my head in amazement, I know that I am in the right place. No where have I seen a woman throw a right hand like that, a Kronk right hand. A right hand that could set you on your seat.

Looking around I could not find my subject. Turning to Mr. Logan I ask, "Hey, have you seen K-9". Mr. Logan smiles and points to the cieling, "He's up playing basketball, you'll find him in the gym." Thanking him, I quickly make my way to the gym upstairs. As I enter the gym, I stop and look around. There, on the far side of the gym, my subject was in the process of a long jumpshot from behind the 3 point line. It bounced off of the rim and straight into the air. Again it bounced off of the rim and then down to the floor. He ran up like a little kid in play, grabbed the ball and dribbling the ball turned to see me observing. With a huge smile he points at me and jogs over to where I stand.

You would not know by watching him that he was a fighter, nor by even talking with him. When he smiles he has such a warmth with his personality. You would never guess that in a little under two months this man was going to be stepping into the ring to throw fists in the biggest fight of his career. In a featured bout on Showtimes, Sho Box- The Next Generation; K-9, Cornelius Bundrage, (21-0(13) will square up against fellow undefeated prospect Sechew Powell.

In the ring this man is known as K-9 and his nickname is not that of a dog for no reason. For this dog is a trained fighter and on a mission to be the best, a mission that he see's leading him to a world title. Things havent always been easy for Cornelius. At the beginning of his career, Cornelius felt that he was not being treated fairly by the judges. Although he won every one of his fights, it seemed that the judges were not rewarding his aggressive style.

"Ya know, at the time the judges didnt know who I was. I always had an akward style back then. I didnt come up learning jab,jab..right hand. I came up hooks, rights and more hooks." In a bout against a young, tough opponent named Charles Howe, Cornelius was only awarded a split decision victory when in his eyes and many others eyes it was a near shut out. "I had this guy bleeding from both eyes and did everything as it was planned.... one judge gave him the fight." Unable to believe this Cornelius, with his faith in god says, "by gods way I pulled out the decision."

The wins did not stop there, and Cornelius does not see the streak ending with this bout approaching. "I want to show everybody that I am the best out there." Cornelius knows the routine of others fighting soft touches until they are ranked, but he has no fear in stepping in with Powell, (15-0(9). "You gotta take chances or you will stay in the same place forever." He backs those words with his faith in the lord, "If god tells me to do it, then I'm going to do it."

Engaged, with a 4 year old son Da'Shawn, Bundrage is set in his visions and desires. "That boy is the apple of my eye." Again that great smile comes accrossed his face. "I think of him when I am in my fights and you know what? It makes the fights so much easier." Cornelius also holds a part time job to go with his training and family. He is working part time with the mentaly handicapped, driving buses, setting and running activities for them aswell as just being there to help them when they need somebody special.

Inspired by Mike Tyson and Thomas Hearns, Cornelius began his quest for his dream. It was not easy for him at first by any means. "I was learning on the job, ya know. I was fighting on E.S.P.N and the commentators are saying that I had no identity, no real style." This did not sit well with Bundrage. "I'm not looking to be no Mike Tyson or Roy Jones, I'm creating the K-9!"

With this upcoming bout, Cornelius could propel himself into the rankings where he is hungry to get at the men that are considered to be the best in the world. "When I first started, they told me that I was going to be nothing, well this is my time to shine." Powell will have his hands full come May 7th; at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut when he steps in to face Cornelius Bundrage. This god fearing man, with his family and his dreams riding on each round will be ruthless if neccesary. So I dont recommend trying to take anything from this dogs plate. Wanting to give his loving family everything that they deserve, you could very well lose some flesh.

                      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
---Ronald Hearns - Casting His Own Shadow---

Ronald Hearns is not the name that normally comes to mind when you hear the name Hearns. His father, the great Thomas Hearns, had done some great things in his time and now Ronald is looking to do some in his own. Training at the legendary Kronk gym in Detroit, Ronald is working the heavybag as a professional fighter now. Having only competed in 10 amatuer bouts, I thought that it might be a bit early when I heard that he had turned professional. But watching Ronald work the bag, reminded my alot of his father. That sizzling jab pounding into the bag, the right hand snapping behind it. This man has learned alot and been trained very well in his short time in the game.

After losing in the Olympic Trials, to the eventual United States representitive Anthony Dirrell, on a close decision Ronald decided it was time to turn professional. "In the amatuers its all points, theres no body work and its at a hurried pace. In the pros, its laid back, you take your time and pick your shots." Hearns would be quick in disposing of 3 of his first 5 opponents in the first round while compiling a 5-0 record with 3 knockouts.

You would think that being the son of Thomas Hearns that boxing would be something that his dad would have shown him at a young age. But it wasnt. "You know what..." Ronald says, "I knew that it was in me from the time that I was 11 or 12 years old. My dad did not want me boxing. I would be sneaking out and going down to kronk to try and learn to box, but my dad always seemed to find out." This did not please Father or Mother. His mother wanted him to go to school, which he did. After high school Ronald would attend American University where he would finish with a degree in Criminal Justice.

Ronald has always loved boxing. He ofcourse loved to watch his father box but he also enjoyed Ali and Delahoya, although Felix Trinidad is his favorite. Now in the gym he gets good work in sparring from Johnathon Banks, Ruebin Williams and Greg Wright. Ronald will be showing his skills again soon at an unknown location soon. He is scheduled to fight April 22nd as well as April 29th.

Ronald is looking to grow into a world champion, on his own. "People think that I am just working off of my fathers name. I am going to prove myself worthy and be judged for Ronald Hearns not my father. I am very competitive and I am determined. When people doubt me, I become even better."

Watching Ronald work in the gym erased any doubt that I may have had before this interview. I judged a few of his early amatuer bouts, while I thought he had some talent I was not overly impressed. However, in a very short time this man has grown and will continue to grow into his own. He is Ronald Hearns, and in a realitively short time, may be casting very large shadows of his own...........
