Some writers are long winded, this is true. But some are not [usually the more talented ones], this is also true. But to get the job done right and get people to read you week after week, you need a degree--period. Passion is not enough.

Hey, maybe if I have enough passion I could be a doctor too right? Or maybe if I'm passionate enough I could be an architect too right? Lets even dumb it down a little----if I have enough passion I could train myself into the middleweight champ right? Who needs training from a trainer in a gym right? Writers train, in an academic setting with a trainer which are often referred to as professors.

Hear what all you guys are saying. I'll do my homework and see if their any local gyms but I do know that my town isn't a particulary big fight town. For boxing that is. It's more MMA. Might require some travel for boxing gyms. Do you recommend that I start with local MMA guys and work my way up? I'm thinking about starting a combat sports website that way I could start making a name for myself in the fight journalism circuit.

Get started by making your own website, set up one of those podcast talking shows with boxers, it seems they are pretty easy to get a hold of. The get your name out there.

Well, well.... I've encountered a by the book douche bag, look outside of the box my man.

You don't have to have a degree to be a good writer. Doctors put bodies back together and fighters train to dismantle them. A writer simply puts words together to inform the reader or to create a picture in their minds. It's just the same as art. I never went to college for it, never even had a class yet I can create things that some of the all mighty degree holders could never imagine. I took what I learned in highschool and continued in my own "study" of it. I've grown through the years just as any writer with knowledge of the english language and CREATIVE mind can. Not having a degree may make you undesirable in the business world but it in no way means that you can not write or create. And as for your professors, in my time in college I found them very hard to communicate with outside of their daily lectures. Either you have the creative talent to do it or you don't. A degree will not neccesarily mean you have the creativity....Rockin'

I can actually afford it. To an extent. Local fights anyway.

For the people who mention Dan Rafael, care to share your thoughts on why he's a bad writer? When I read his work compared to some of the crap that gets posted here, he sounds like a linguistic genius.
