The real story behind Gamboa losing his IBF belt

Last week, Miguel Angel Garcia fought in an IBF final eliminator in the undercard of Gamboa-Solis. A win was going to elevate him as Gamboa's next mandatory.

The problem? His team publicly confessed that Mikey was not ready for Gamboa yet.

The other problem? He's being promoted by Top Rank. Uncle Bob doesn't feed his prospects to the wolves just like that...

The Top Rank solution: Why not have 3 champs instead of just 2 and a prospect?

Since this is in Bob's best interest, they didn't allow Gamboa to participate in the second weigh-in required by the IBF. Gamboa felt Top Rank was being unfair to him. That situation made him unhappy and frustrated since he had the required weight to keep his two belts.

He then decided to throw knives at Top Rank right after his fight during the Kellerman interview. As a response, Top Rank cancelled his post-fight press conference and didn't tell him. Gamboa went to the "press conference" and found himself alone, no one was attending.

Now the good part. As planned by Bob, another final eliminator has been mandated by the IBF. Mexicans Jorge Lacierva and Fernando Beltrán will fight to get that winning ticket. The winner will face Mikey Garcia and Garcia will finally become a champion, the easy way...

To make it short, Arum took a belt from Gamboa and gave it to Garcia. Uncle Bob is still the boss. It's sickening to know how he can manipulate the game the way he wants and get along with it. At the end of the day, the good fights never happen and the sport keeps going down.

He will now have 3 Latin champions, one Cuban, one Puerto Rican, and of course, one Mexican. Top Rank now controls the featherweight scene, it possesses all the champions and nobody else will be able to do a thing about it.

A Mexican champ in boxing has too much value, it's like a precious gem. That's why this all happened. Instead of facing Gamboa as he should, Mikey will now become a champ and a cash cow.

These 3 fighters would do awesome fights if mixed together. Instead, you can count on Uncle Bob to milk them for a few years. He will try to create a big Cuban-Boricua-Mexican rivalry, and all the fans will be suffering while those fights don't happen.

I mean, the rivalry will be fun, now Mexicans can jump in the big party and all... but this shouldn't happen this way. A promoter shouldn't have this much power. All this politic bs is bad for boxing.

Solid post. One that I don't think is too far off at all. However, I think that the fights will eventually happen. Just not as fast as fans would like. I can see them happening in the next 18 to 24 months.

Financially, it makes sense. Everyone makes more money and the fights only build. If another fighter comes in, I can see a huge event being made out of this.

    Still, very good post.

Great post, solid opinions. Would appreciate some links though. Can anyone confirm that Gamboa showed up to the conference unaware that it was cancelled? And what was TR's excuse for not allowing him to participate in the weigh in??

Max Kellerman actually said that Garcia's team wasn't ready to take on Gamboa. He said that during Gamboa's match. I'll try to find the round he said that in.

As you say, the "fans" might be "suffering" but the fighters won't. Arum will be making plenty of money for his fighters and for the company he's still responsible for and to, and the fans will have another champion to follow. What's wrong with that.

One thing though. The way i understand your news release, it looks as if Top Rank was able to TAKE a championship from Gamboa. If true, this should NOT be allowed. If gamboa won it fair and square, it belongs to HIM.

And can only be lost if he gives it up or loses in the ring. (or turns up overweight etc)

I still don't understand how Top Rank can do such a thing with impunity, agaiinst the wishes of the champion, Gamboa.
