Gamboa's progression has been amazing IMO. When he first went pro, the power was there, the speed was blinding, but he was not polished at all. Only a few years later Gamboa looks like a P4P type guy. He's graduated from being a athletic freak who didn't know how to control himself to a polished professional with an all around game.
Originally I thought JuanMa would beat Gamboa, but now I think Gamboa would take him.Comment

It's amazing how people continue to get caught up in this hype.He scores an early knockout and suddenly he's the next big thing and the most amazing thing in boxing. If you really want to see what type of fighter he is,watch his sloppy efforts against Barrios and Salido - or any fight of his that lasts longer than a couple of rounds.
Gamboa is explosive and athletic, but he's also a very sloppy fighter that still has many amateur flaws and lacks real ring intelligence.A fighter of genuine class will make him pay for these lapses in defense and his suspect chin.Comment

In his prime...NOBODY...nobody...is messing with Roy Jones. Gamboa better than RJ, based on what exactly? He's talented and hasn't had a marquee match up yet. RJ dominated a future HOF in Toney.Last edited by switchsouthpaw; 03-29-2011, 08:37 AM.Comment

If the flaws you're talking about are how he's shorter but likes to sit on the outside being traditionally wrong, I'd say you're wrong because of how good his timing is jumping on the inside and delivering power shots. That's one thing that sets him apart is his timing, it really is pretty good. He's had alot of amateur fights, around 350 from what I heard, which is more than any current active professional at or near the top. I like the way he fights, the one thing aside from how good his timing is, is how comfortable he is in the ring. He just moves around so relaxed but he's so fast and is pretty good at coming back with a looping left after a cross, I'd say it carries the power of something like Allan Green's who is a super middleweight I believeComment

Don't take it personal, but he had a tougher upbringing and training experience from youth to now than Roy could ever imagine. While Roy was in the chicken coop, Yuri was in a boxing camp somewhere sparring all kinds of different styles from a very young age. Gamboa's vast amateur experience puts him ahead of roy jones in ring intelligence . Believe me. Roy has 121-13 amateur record. Gamboa has had more than double that in amateur bouts. we're talking 300ishComment
