think of all the good fighters coming from europe these days: ricky hatton, the klitschkos, felix sturm, john duddy, markus beyer, and lennox lewis to name a few.

I dont think so mate, theres no way general europeans overhype their fighters, thats just the Germans. Germans build their **** fighters up with bias judging and unfair refs(i.e Ottke). It gives europe a bad name.

I've always considered Americans to over hype fighters far too much, i.e. Ouma, anyone who had seen both Karmazin and Ouma fight before knew Ouma was going to get beat, but Ouma was the hyped fighter and nobdoy even mentioned Karmazin.

Maybe I'm just thinking of Germany, then, but maybe some of other Central/European countries as well? I seem to remember there being some silliness in a fight from Poland I saw once...and I know that when Bute fought back in Romania they paraded him into the ring like he was a national hero, when over here he is more or less an unknown.

I think the Ouma hype has more to do with Golden Boy than anything. The promoters in the States play up their fighters a lot but it doesn't translate as much into a national pride issue.

                Uhh, come again?

Ouma was never overhyped. He was hyped because he looked good when he beat several top ten guys at 154 lbs. I knew Karmazin was a threat before the fight because he had beaten Larry Holmes, but even then, Ouma had the flu vs Karmazin and did not look like himself at all. You can credit Karmazin, but not fully, for the way Ouma looked.
